Subedar Neeraj Chopra is more than just a world-class athlete; he is a symbol of dedication, excellence, and honor—qualities that define a true officer and a gentleman. His historic gold medal win in javelin at the Tokyo 2020 Olympics catapulted him into the league of legends, making him the first Indian track and field athlete to achieve this feat. Despite these extraordinary accomplishments, the question remains: Why has this national icon not been promoted to an officer’s rank in the Indian Army?
It is ironic that the Indian Army, which rightly honors celebrities and cricketers with honorary officer ranks, has yet to confer such recognition on one of its own—a soldier who has not only represented the nation but has also brought unparalleled glory to it. Neeraj Chopra’s achievements on the global stage have not only uplifted the spirits of millions but have also significantly bolstered the prestige of the Indian Army. However, this valor and pride have not translated into the deserved promotion within his own ranks.
Neeraj Chopra exemplifies the virtues of an officer—integrity, leadership, and a commitment to excellence. These are qualities that some with higher ranks might lack, despite their titles. His humility, discipline, and unwavering dedication to his craft make him a role model for soldiers and civilians alike. In every sense, Neeraj is already an officer; it is time his rank reflected that.
What makes this situation even more perplexing is the Army’s tradition of conferring honorary officer ranks on film stars and cricketers. While these personalities certainly contribute to national pride in their own ways, it is hard to overlook the fact that Neeraj Chopra, a soldier who has directly represented the Indian Army and the country on the global stage, has not been similarly recognized. The Army’s decision-makers must ask themselves: What are we missing? Why should a gem like Neeraj, who has done so much for his country and the Army, not be given the recognition he so richly deserves?
Supporting Subedar Neeraj Chopra’s promotion to a commissioned officer’s rank would not only honor his incredible achievements but also send a powerful message about the values the Indian Army upholds. It would be an acknowledgment that excellence in service, irrespective of the rank one holds, should be celebrated and rewarded. By promoting Neeraj Chopra, the Army would be setting a precedent that true merit, dedication, and service to the nation are recognized at the highest levels.
In conclusion, Neeraj Chopra is not just a world-class athlete; he is a true officer in every sense. It is high time that the Indian Army acknowledges this by conferring upon him the commissioned officer rank he has more than earned. Let us honour this living legend and ensure that the Army’s brightest stars are celebrated not just on the field but also within the ranks they serve so valiantly.
