With the Employees Provident Fund Organisation (EPFO) introducing a slew of measures over the last few months to facilitate easy fund transfer and hassle-free withdrawal facilities, more and more EPF members appeared to have checked their PF balance through the EPFO portal and other modes. Google Trends data of the past one week suggests that ‘PF balance’ were among the top searched keywords on the internet.
How can EPFO members check PF balance?
There are numerous ways to check PF balance, both with and without Universal Account Number (UAN). Subscribers can check their PF balance using UAN number, EPFO portal, UMANG App.
They can also check their PF balance even if they don’t have UAN number.
They can use SMS facility or give a miss call on this number – 9966044425 from their registered mobile number.
How to Check PF Balance by UAN Number?
Before you start, make sure that you have activated your UAN – a unique identification number. UAN is given to all employees enrolled under the EPF scheme.

Once UAN is activated, here are steps to follow:
Step 1: Go to EPFO portal and visit ‘For Employees’ section under ‘Services’ at the top of the page.
Step 2: Click ‘Member Passbook’ under ‘services’.
Step 3: New page opens. Now enter your UAN and password.
Step 4. Fill in the ‘Captcha’ and Sign In. If you don’t remember the password, go to UAN portal and in the login page, click ‘Forgot password’. You need to follow the instructions given by the site accordingly.
Step 4: You will receive a 6-digit OTP on your Aadhaar-linked phone number.
Step 5: Enter the OTP and click ‘Verify’. You can see PF account balance on the screen.
Note: You must remember that your EPF balance on the EPFO portal will be shown only if your UAN is activated and registered on the EPFO portal.
This facility is now available for exempted establishment members and private trusts.
Check PF balance using the UMANG/EPFO App
EPFO members can check their EPF balance on their phones by downloading the Unified Mobile Application for New-age Governance (UMANG) app. Apart from EPF balance check, the app also facilitate in filing and tracking claims. EPF subscribers need to complete a one-time registration using their UAN-registered cellphone number to access the app.
Here’s how you can use the UMANG app to view your EPF transactions:
Step 1: Download the UMANG app from Google Play Store or App Store.
Step 2: Log in to the UMANG app. Select ‘Services’ and click ‘Social Security’ option.
Step 3: Click ‘EPFO’ option.
Step 4: Under ‘Employee Centric Service’, click ‘View Passbook’.
Step 5: Enter UAN and a OTP will be sent on your registered mobile number.
Step 6: Enter the OTP and click ‘Submit’ button.
Step 7: The passbook opens on the screen.
Step 9: Click ‘Download’ button to download the EPF passbook.

PF balance check by sending an SMS:
Once UAN is integrated with KYC details, follow these steps:
Step 1: Send an SMS to this mobile number – 7738299899.
Step 2: The format of the message will be like this – ‘EPFOHO UAN ENG’.
You can set your preferred language of communication in the SMS. For example – if you wish to receive updates in English, use the first three characters of the word English, i.e. EPFOHO UAN ENG. If you want message updates in Marathi, then type in EPFOHO UAN MAR.
