In a major relief for millions of Aadhaar holders, the Unique Identification Authority of India (UIDAI) has finally activated the mobile number update facility online. Users can now change their registered mobile number directly through the new Aadhaar App, without visiting an Aadhaar centre.
This is the first time UIDAI has allowed this crucial update to be done digitally.
‘Mobile number update’ goes live on Aadhaar App
Till now, changing your mobile number required a physical visit to an Aadhaar Enrolment Centre. With the latest update, the Aadhaar App now shows ‘Mobile Number Update’ as an active option under the update section.
This is a major convenience boost, as the mobile number is essential for OTP-based Aadhaar authentication for almost all online services.
Other demographic details updates still not active
Apart from mobile number, the app has three more sections under demographic updates: Name Update; Email ID Update; and Address Update.
However, when checked, all these features currently show: “This feature is coming soon, it is in development phase!”
So while these options are visible, the service has not yet gone live. UIDAI is expected to activate them gradually.
‘Date of Birth update’ missing in Aadhaar App
Interestingly, Date of Birth (DoB) update — which was expected in the app — is not visible at all. Unlike other updates that show a “coming soon” message, the DoB update option itself has not been included in the app.
It remains to be seen whether UIDAI enables this feature later.
Biometric updates will remain offline
The Aadhaar App will not offer biometric updates such as: Fingerprints, Iris scan, and Photograph.
These require physical verification, so users will still need to visit an authorised Aadhaar Enrolment Centre for biometric changes.
A bigger shift in Aadhaar services
For many years, the only Aadhaar detail that could be updated online was the address. With the new Aadhaar App, UIDAI is preparing to allow all major demographic updates online—except biometrics.
As of today, only mobile number update is active, but once the remaining features are rolled out, Aadhaar users will have much more flexibility and convenience.
