This has been an incredible hare and tortoise story. Chandrayaan-3 took the trip to the moon slow and steady, learning from the shortcomings of Chandrayaan-2. India has reached the South Pole of the moon with a soft landing of the Vikram Lander. Now the Pragyan rover will deploy and conduct experiments over the next 14 days, sending back never-seen-before visuals and hopefully, exciting new discoveries of minerals and… water (ice), which Chandrayaan-1 had confirmed. Russia almost made it as well, but the Luna spacecraft, which took off later than Chandrayaan, crash-landed on the moon. India, which had a similar experience in July 2019, has learnt from that experience and has succeeded with Chandrayaan-3. Slow and steady wins the race? You bet!
The Lander is now on the surface of the moon!!!!!!!
Its time for a soft landing. Scanning the surface of the moon. Only two thrusters being fired. It's hovering over the surface. Now just 50 metres from the surface! That's CLOSE!
Vikram Lander is in vertical decent phase 2. It is now 150 metres above the lunar surface, where it will scan the surface and then get set to land!
The lander begins decent to the landing site. Only 280 metres to go.
The fine braking phase is on. Lander is now just 800 metres above the surface of the moon. It's like coming in for landing on an aircraft, the altitude at which one would deploy flaps and lower the landing gear. This is that moment for Vikram Lander.
The attitude hold phase is on. The Lander's vertical velocity is 26.38 m/s and the horizontal velocity is 78 m/s. Now the Lander is just 2km above the surface of the moon!
Final braking process underway. 80 per cent of lander's journey completed.
The power decent phase is on. The horizontal velocity is now 720 m/s, as the Vikram Lander is continuing to slow down. At the end of the rough braking phase it will be just 7.4 km from the surface of the moon. Brake, brake, brake! Nail-biting moments for ISRO!
Chandrayaan's lunar decent underway, lander now reducing its speed.
The vertical velocity of the Lander module has been reduced. It has now come down to 1150 m/s as it continues with the rough braking phase. It is now about 27 km from the surface of the moon.
During the rough braking phase of Vikram lander it will decelerate from 1680 m/s and the altitude will reduce from 7.4 km to 6.4 km. At this moment it is 31 km from the moon surface.
The Indian Space Research Organisation is now live! It looks like a sense of calm has descended over the control room, but the pressure is quite evident!
With only a few hours remaining before the highly anticipated soft landing attempt of the ISRO lander on the lunar south pole, students from Hansraj Public School in Bihar's Gaya organized a special program to wish success to India's third lunar mission, Chandrayaan-3. The students displayed their creativity by crafting a variety of posters and orchestrating a dedicated event to commemorate the forthcoming successful landing of Chandrayaan 3. Their enthusiasm was further demonstrated through a heartfelt rendition of “Saare Jahan Se Accha Hindustan Hamara.” Across the globe, prayers are echoing, uniting individuals of diverse religious backgrounds in their hope for the triumphant landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 at the Moon's South Pole.
Various scientists and dignitaries have arrived at the Bengaluru headquarters of ISRO. The place is packed with mediapersons! People across the country are now glued to their television sets and ready to watch Chandrayaan-3 make history.
Throughout West Bengal on Wednesday, individuals gathered at temples to offer special prayers for the Chandrayaan-3 lander module's triumphant landing on the moon. At the Bhole Baba temple situated along the banks of the River Hooghly, BJP leaders and devotees came together to conduct a yagna, seeking blessings for the successful and gentle touchdown of the Vikram lander, reported PTI. Among the participants in the 'yagna,' which commenced at approximately 11 am, were BJP State General Secretary Deepanjan Guja and Hooghly-Chinsurah District BJP President Tushar Majumdar.
Union Minister Hardeep Singh Puri joined a special 'ardas' ceremony at Delhi's Gurdwara Bangla Sahib on Wednesday, offering prayers for the successful lunar landing of India's Chandrayaan-3 mission, slated for today.
Speaking with reporters, Puri shared that the ardas was conducted with the sole intention of ensuring the secure and prosperous landing of Chandrayaan-3.
The Indian Space Research Organisation (ISRO) is poised for the Chandrayaan-3 mission, which will strive to touch down on the lunar south pole at approximately 6:04 p.m. local time (1234 GMT) on Wednesday. This marks India's second attempt to reach this region. In 2019, ISRO's Chandrayaan-2 mission successfully dispatched an orbiter, yet its lander encountered an unfortunate crash.
