It was in September 2014 that Prime Minister Narendra Modi raised the idea of celebrating Yoga day internationally in the UN. On December 11, 2014, UN marked the 21st of June of every year as International Yoga Day and the following year, first International Yoga Day was celebrated.

June 21 is International Yoga Day, observed worldwide. Each year, a theme is announced; this year’s theme is “Yoga for Self and Society.” Last year’s theme was “Yoga for Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam — One Earth, One Family,” with celebrations led by Prime Minister Modi on the North Lawn of the UN Headquarters in New York City.
The inaugural Yoga Day festivities took place in 2015 at Raj Path in New Delhi, where Modi and other dignitaries set two Guinness World Records: the largest yoga session with 35,985 participants and the most nations represented, totaling 84.
Maharashtra Chief Minister Eknath Shinde and Deputy Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis participated in a yoga session on Friday to commemorate the 10th International Day of Yoga.

UP Minister Dharampal Singh led yoga exercises with officials at Kailash Prakash Sports Stadium in Meerut on International Yoga Day. Rajya Sabha MP Vijaypal Tomar, Kanta Kardam, District Magistrate Deepak Meena, Chief Development Officer Nupur Goyal, Chief Medical Officer Dr. Akhilesh Mohan, and numerous other officials and residents joined in the session.
Minister Dharampal emphasized that maintaining health is achievable through yoga. District Magistrate Deepak Meena recommended incorporating yoga into daily life to manage stress effectively.
President Droupadi Murmu described yoga as India’s unique gift to humanity, highlighting its increased significance due to the rise in lifestyle-related issues. She, along with other officials from the President’s Secretariat, also practiced yoga at Rashtrapati Bhavan.
Union Minister Shivraj Singh Chouhan thanked PM Modi and said, “…He made Yoga reach the world…I hope everyone makes Yoga a part of their daily life…I do Yoga everyday.”
He emphasised the importance of incorporating Yoga into daily routines as he participated in a Yoga session on the International Day of Yoga in Delhi.

Ashwini Vaishnaw today said that Yoga Shastra is a vital part of India‘s cultural heritage. He said that PM Modi’s global promotion of Yoga has significantly earned widespread recognition. He further added that today, yoga enthusiasts around the world are making positive changes in their personal lives and society through its practice.
Ahead of performing Yoga asanas is Srinagar, PM Modi in his speech said that the world is seeing new Yoga economy going forward.
Union Minister Jitendra Singh, Principal Secretary to PM Modi, PK Mishra, and other officials participated in a Yoga session which was held at the Prime Minister’s Office South Block in Delhi.
“Last year, I lead yoga day celebration at UN in US. The journey of Yoga around the world is ongoing. I am happy that today over 100 institutions have been certified by AYUSH Ministry’s Yoga Board. The number of people performing yoga is increasing,” PM Modi said in his speech today.

Union Minister Bhupender Yadav celebrated the 10th International Yoga Day in Uttarakhand today by practicing Yoga at the Indira Gandhi National Forest Academy in Dehradun. Simultaneously, Union Minister Mansukh Mandaviya participated in a yoga session in Delhi to honor the International Day of Yoga.
Addressing a gathering on International Day of Yoga, PM Narendra Modi today extended his wishes to people across the country and to those who are performing Yoga in every corner of the world. “In 2014, I proposed International Yoga Day at the United Nations. This proposal by India was supported by 177 nations and this was a record in itself. Since then, Yoga Day has been creating new records,” the PM said.
