Director-actor Prithviraj Sukumaran’s recently released film, L2: Empuraan, starring Malayalam superstar Mohanlal, might have been embroiled in controversy but that hasn’t affected the film’s run at the box-office. Having grossed more than Rs 250 crore worldwide, L2: Empuraan is now the highest-grossing Malayalam movie ever. It beat the collection of Manjummel Boys, which earned Rs 241 crore (gross) in its lifetime, in just nine days, emerging as the top performing Malayalam movie.

On Monday, the film earned Rs 1.75 crore nett (gross minus taxes), which is a huge drop. Empuraan earned Rs 100.10 crore at the domestic box office. Even though the pace has dropped, Empuraan is expected to pick up pace during its third weekend. This is now the third highest-grossing film in India in 2025 so far, trailing behind Vicky Kaushal’s Chhaava, which earned over Rs 800 crore, and Sankranthiki Vasthunam, which minted Rs 255 crore.

L2: Empuraan, directed by Prithviraj Sukumaran, also features Manju Warrier, Tovino Thomas, Jerome Flynn, Suraj Venjaramoodu and several others as part of the cast, apart from Sukumaran and Mohanlal. It is jointly produced by Aashirvad Cinemas, Sree Gokulam Movies and Lyca Productions.
