Akshay Kumar’s Kesari has emerged as the biggest opener at the box office this year. Kesari, directed by Anurag Singh, is a based on true events that took place in 1897’s British India. The film is a dramatic presentation of the Battle of saragarhi in which 21 Sikh soldiers were pitched against approximately 10,000 invaders. The film is a tale of the one of the bravest last-stands in the history of battles, that, according to some, eclipses even the Battle of Thermopylae.

At the box office too, the film roared to a giant opening, smashing all records of 2019. Film critic and trade analyst Taran Adarsh tweeted: “Kesari roars. Sets the BO on Fire(emojis). Emerges the biggest opener of 2019 (so far). After limited shows in morning/noon [Holi festivities], the biz witnessed massive growth from 3 pm/4 pm onwards. Evening shows saw terrific occupancy. Thu ₹ 21.50 cr. India biz.”

Taran Adarsh added that Kesari has outscored other biggies of 2019 viz., Gully Boy, Total Dhamaal and even Hollywood’s Captain Marvel (in India).

In his one word review for Kesari, Taran Adarsh called the movie “oustanding” and gave it four star rating and added, “(Kesari) Chronicles a significant chapter from history brilliantly. Nationalism, patriotism, heroism, scale and soul – Kesari has it all. Akshay’s career-best act. Anurag Singh’s direction terrific. Don’t miss!”

Kesari released on Thursday, on the occasion of Holi, will see an extended first weekend and if the trend continued, it is expected to garner a big first weekend box office collection. Apart from Akshay Kumar, Kesari has Govind Namdev, Mir Sarwar, Rajpal Yadav, Vansh Bhardwaj and Parineeti Chopra in important roles.
