James Cameron’s Avatar franchise has a loyal fanbase in India and this is apparent with the film’s consistent collections despite Ranveer Singh’s Dhurandhar wiping out all the recent releases. While the Hollywood film’s earnings are nowhere close to the Aditya Dhar-directorial, it’s still holding its own, maintaining decent collections in 10-11 days of its release.

Avatar: Fire and Ash is being widely watched by the Indian audiences and became the highest grossing Hollywood film of 2025, beating Mission: Impossible – The Final Reckoning. This is despite release in limited screens, mixed reviews and strong competition from Indian releases.

Avatar: Fire and Ash box office journey so far

The Cameron film starring Sam Worthington, Zoe Saldana, Stephen Lang, Kate Winslet, and David Thewlist among others opened to Rs 19 crore on its release date (December 19). The collections grew to Rs 22.5 crore on Saturday and Rs 25.75 crore on Sunday, and the film was way above the Rs 100 crore mark by end of Week 1.

As Avatar 3 maintained steady collections in its Week 2, the latest box office figures suggest it may soon garner Rs 150 crore at the box office with the current earnings of Rs 137.81 crore at the Indian box office so far.

Meanwhile, the third edition of the Avatar series has reached an estimated $760.4 million on Sunday globally. Coming up next is Avatar 4 and Avatar 5. Director Cameron told Empire in 2022 that he may want to “pass the baton” to another director for rest of the Avatar franchise. However, before Avatar: Fire and Ash release, he said “there’s no reason not to” direct the next sequel himself.

How Dhurandhar storm affected December releases

Dhurandhar that released on December 5 was one of the year’s biggest releases, but nobody could imagine the film being a threat to movies releasing towards the end of December, especially Christmas releases. As the word of mouth spread about the Ranveer Singh-starrer, the film drew unprecedented crowds prompting Ikkis makers Maddock Films to advance the release to January 1. However, Tu Meri Main Tera Main Tera Tu Meri, released as scheduled on December 25, and the Dharma Productions film has performed below par so far, struggling to reach even Rs 25 crore in India in four days, a disappointing fate for a Kartik Aaryan film.

Meanwhile, Kapil Sharma’s Kis Kisko Pyaar Karoon 2 was also unprepared for the Dhurandhar wave as the film released a week after the biggest blockbuster of the year vanished without a trace, and is somewhere around the Rs 12 crore mark in India as per Sacnilk. The film will now be re-released in January 2026 for another chance at the box office.
