A new trend that has taken over the internet is the magic of ‘color-changing’ makeup products. Several products including foundations, blush, and lipsticks change color on contacting the skin.

The working of such products is mainly based on the pH levels of the skin. The pH levels indicate the acidity of the skin. The growing trend of pH-based makeup is generally considered safe for use.

In a conversation with Financial Express, Dr Seema Oberoi Lall, Consultant, Dermatology at CK Birla Hospital, Gurugram, said, “pH-based makeup and pH lipsticks are a growing trend in the beauty industry. They are generally considered safe for use. The ingredients in pH lipsticks are generally the same as the ingredients in other types of lipsticks. However, some pH lipsticks may contain additional ingredients, such as fragrances or flavors, which could cause irritation.”

“The main ingredient in pH-based makeup is usually a bromo acid dye, which is a type of pH indicator. These dyes are generally considered safe for cosmetic use by the FDA.”, she added.

The trend took over social media when makeup influencers shared the ‘magical’ products in their videos. Several big brands also launched products that changed color according to the pH of the skin.

Dr Seema Oberoi Lall explained the workings of such products and emphasized the importance of awareness and caution while using these products. She said, “They work by reacting to your skin’s pH level, resulting in a customized shade that’s unique to you. So, approaching them with caution and awareness is crucial. Some people may have sensitive skin that reacts to pH-based makeup. If you have sensitive skin, it’s always a good idea to do a patch test before applying the product to your face.”

The making of all makeup products undergo a testing process and so do pH-based lipsticks. Dr DM Mahajan, Senior Consultant, Dermatology at Indraprastha Apollo hospitals told Financial Express, “pH-based makeup, including pH lipstick formulations, undergo rigorous testing to ensure their safety for use on the skin. The pH scale measures acidity or alkalinity, with the skin generally maintaining a slightly acidic pH of around 4.7 to 5.75. pH-based cosmetics are designed to align with this natural skin pH, promoting compatibility and minimizing the risk of irritation.”

On the safety of pH-based makeup products, Dr DM Mahajan further added, “Maintaining an appropriate pH level is crucial for skin health, as deviations can disrupt the skin barrier function. pH-based makeup formulations aim to support the skin’s delicate balance, reducing the likelihood of adverse reactions such as redness or dryness.”

Dr Mahajan also explained the functioning of color-changing lipsticks and said “pH lipstick, specifically, recognizes the sensitivity of the lips and endeavors to match their natural pH range. This attention to pH balance is crucial, as the lips lack oil glands and are prone to dryness. pH-friendly lip products contribute to a comfortable wearing experience, minimizing the risk of chapping or discomfort.”

Dr Mahajan advises, “Consumers seeking safe cosmetics should look for products labeled as dermatologist-tested and hypoallergenic. Patch testing on a small skin area before full application can further assess individual tolerance.”
