Senior advocate Narender Hooda, representing the lead petitioner, raised concerns in court about a conflict of interest at IIT Madras. “One of the Directors of IIT Madras is a member of the governing body of the NTA. They have conducted data analytics using the entire dataset. If data analytics were applied to 2.3 million candidates, any abnormalities from the inclusion of 10,000 or 20,000 individuals would go undetected. The proper procedure should have been to apply this process to 108,000 candidates,” Hooda stated. However, NTA clarified that a former director was a member of the governing body.
Senior advocate Narender Hooda, representing the lead petitioner, presented the executive summary of the IIT Madras report. “The analysis by IIT Madras showed that there is neither any indication of mass malpractice nor a localised set of candidates being benefitted leading to abnormal scores,” says the report.
Solicitor General Tushar Mehta informed the Court that 131 students, who exceed the 108,000 seat limit, are seeking a retest, while 254 students within this limit are against it. Senior advocate Sanjay Hegde emphasised that some students within the 108,000 limit are also vying for government seats.
During the hearing on NEET UG 2024, Chief Justice DY Chandrachud emphasized that any decision on a re-examination must be based on solid grounds, stating, “We cannot order a re-examination simply because only 1 lakh out of 23 lakh candidates will secure admission.”
‘Re-examination has to be on a concrete footing that the entire exam is affected,’ CJI observed.
During today’s proceedings, Chief Justice (CJI) commented on the ongoing investigation, stating, “Today, an investigation is ongoing, and if the information provided by CBI is disclosed, people will become cautious.” The Chief Justice made this remark in response to a petitioner’s request to access the CBI report.
In another statement emphasising the importance of the NEET matter, the Supreme Court affirmed that NEET remains a top priority in the current proceedings.
