Indian Institute of Technology Kanpur (IITK) has inaugurated Mehta Family Centre for Engineering in Medicine (MFCEM). The institute claims that the primary goal of MFCEM is to foster in the field of biomedical engineering. This centre was established through the support of Rahul Mehta, representing the Bhupat and Jyoti Mehta Family Foundation (MFF). On November 6, 2023, it was formally inaugurated during a two-day inaugural symposium. The centre serves as a collaborative hub, bringing together researchers and scientists to explore the intersection of engineering and medicine, according to an official release.

The symposium featured captivating presentations by leading global experts in three key research areas within MFCEM: Molecular Medicine, Regenerative Medicine and Digital Medicine. Recognising the rapid progress in the realm of digital medicine, the second day of the symposium was dedicated to a session covering various research aspects in this field, the release mentioned.

“IIT Kanpur recognises that the future of innovation in MedTech and healthcare sectors hinges on the convergence of multiple disciplines, with a particular emphasis on the dynamic intersection of engineering and medicine. We express our deep appreciation to Rahul Mehta and the Mehta Family Foundation for their generous contribution towards fostering cutting-edge research in the interdisciplinary domain of biomedical engineering by establishing the MFCEM on campus,” S Ganesh, officiating director, IIT Kanpur, said.

The symposium also provided a platform for students to showcase their research work across the three primary areas of focus at MFCEM. This platform included lightning talks, poster presentations, and interactions with distinguished speakers. Additionally, there were engaging sessions such as a science quiz bowl.

MFCEM claims to remain committed to releasing its vision of developing innovative and sustainable engineering solutions to address medical challenges. The centre aims to leverage the expertise of IIT Kanpur and involves faculty members from various engineering and science departments, including Biological Sciences and Bioengineering (BSBE), Computer Science and Engineering, Chemical Engineering, Chemistry and Cognitive Science, as per the release.

“Under the Mehta Family Foundation, our priority, since inception, has been to support quality-of-life initiatives. We have funded over 100 organisations with the vision of advancing healthcare and education to nurture intellectual talent through global academic collaboration. The MFCEM at the IIT Kanpur aligns with the same goal, and through this, we are striving towards furthering research at the intersection of medicine and engineering,” Rahul Mehta, Mehta Family Foundation, said.
