The engineering sector, traditionally dominated by men, is undergoing a transformative shift as more women step forward to redefine the field. With increasing educational opportunities, evolving societal norms and a growing emphasis on diversity and inclusion, women are leaving their mark across various engineering disciplines, from civil and mechanical engineering to cutting-edge technological innovations.

Recent reports highlight both progress and ongoing challenges in this area. According to the Society of Women Engineers, women made up approximately 16% of engineers and architects in 2023, indicating a significant gender disparity in the field.

Kavita Shirvaikar, Managing Director of Patel Engineering, claims to have demonstrated that inclusivity and diversity are not just ideals but powerful drivers of innovation and success. Shirvaikar joined Patel Engineering in 2014 and has since ascended through the ranks, culminating in her appointment as Managing Director in 2024. Her tenure has been marked by transformative achievements, steering the company through financial and operational challenges to unprecedented success.

“When I joined Patel Engineering, the company faced significant hurdles, but I saw immense potential,” she said. Under her leadership, Patel Engineering has significantly reduced its debt, bringing it down from over Rs 5,500 crore to under Rs 1,500 crore. Simultaneously, the company’s order book expanded to Rs 17,500 crore and its workforce grew from 1,200 to an impressive 4,500 employees.

“Projects like the Sela Tunnel and the Udhampur-Srinagar-Baramulla Rail Project are not just engineering achievements but critical contributions to nation-building,” she said. These efforts have cemented Patel Engineering’s position as a key player in India’s infrastructure development.

Empowering women and championing sustainability

A passionate advocate for women’s leadership, Shirvaikar claims to have prioritised nurturing talent and fostering an inclusive workplace culture. “We need more women at the table, especially in industries where they’ve historically been underrepresented,” she asserts. Her initiatives aim to create pathways for women to thrive in engineering roles, breaking stereotypes and challenging traditional norms.

Beyond inclusivity, Shirvaikar’s vision encompasses sustainability. Patel Engineering claims to actively contribute to India’s renewable energy goals through projects like the Subansiri Hydroelectric Project. “Sustainability is not just an option; it’s our responsibility as engineers to create a future that is both innovative and environmentally conscious,” she emphasises.
