The Ministry of Education will soon introduce Artificial Intelligence (AI) in the school curriculum for students from Class 3 onwards, starting in the 2026-27 academic year. Officials said that a special framework is being developed to ensure AI is smoothly integrated across different grades, according to the news agency PTI.
School Education Secretary Sanjay Kumar told the agency that the aim is to make both students and teachers comfortable with AI in the next two to three years.
“The challenge will be to train over one crore teachers across the country so they can teach AI effectively. The CBSE is currently working on the framework for this,” he explained.
Pilot project already underway
A pilot project has already started to help teachers use AI tools while creating lesson plans. “Our goal is to prepare both learners and teachers for the digital economy,” Kumar added.
Currently, more than 18,000 CBSE schools teach AI as a skill subject from Class 6 onwards through a short 15-hour module. For Classes 9 to 12, AI is offered as an optional subject.
Report highlights AI’s impact on jobs
Kumar made these remarks while releasing a NITI Aayog report on AI and employment. The report noted that while around two million traditional jobs could be lost due to AI, nearly eight million new roles may emerge if India builds the right environment.
The report called for close coordination between the proposed India AI Talent Mission and the existing India AI Mission. It also suggested partnerships between academia, government, and industry to build the right infrastructure and data systems needed to turn India’s young talent into future AI innovators and researchers.
The report concluded that India’s success in the AI-driven economy will depend on timely and coordinated efforts. With strong leadership across sectors, India has the potential not just to protect its workforce but also to emerge as a global leader in Artificial Intelligence.
