A complaint was lodged on Sunday against BJP leader Amit Malviya for making derogatory remarks and accusing West Bengal CM Mamata Banerjee of “shielding criminals,” specifically targeting Shahjahan Sheikh, who remains absconding concerning the ration distribution scam case.

Trinamool Congress leader Chandrima Bhattacharya filed the complaint following Malviya’s social media post, wherein he levelled grave accusations against Mamata Banerjee, alleging her protection of the absconding TMC leader Sahajahan Sheikh. Sheikh stands as the primary suspect in the recent attack on the Enforcement Directorate (ED) in the state.

Malviya alleged that Sahajahan Sheikh evaded law enforcement due to the support of Mamata Banerjee. Malviya wrote that Sheikh, “claimed to be don of Sandeshkhali”, remains elusive. “This wouldn’t have been possible without Mamata Banerjee’s patronage.” He added that Banerjee has a “history of safeguarding criminals”.

Referring to a past incident, he noted, “She has a track record of shielding criminals. Soon after the Bogtui massacre, Mamata Banerjee drove around with accused Anubroto Mondal in her official car. There is no doubt that Sheikh Shahjahan, wherever he is, is under her protection. But just like she couldn’t save Anubroto, she won’t be able to save Shahjahan too. Her blood-soaked empire, built on crime, is crumbling”, Malviya’s post read.

Malviya further urged Banerjee to take action and direct the West Bengal police to apprehend Shahjahan Sheikh and hand him over to the central agencies.

“We have filed a complaint and urged the police to take immediate action against Malviya for his defamatory remarks against the chief minister,” Bhattacharya, also a state minister, told reporters on Sunday.

On Monday, despite the complaint filed against Malviya, he continued his criticism of Banerjee, asking her to address the matter.

“More than 48 hours after Shahjahan Sheikh and his men launched a murderous assault on ED officials, West Bengal police has not been able to arrest him. This is a reflection on Mamata Banerjee, the Home Minister of Bengal, who is either incompetent or complicit”, he said in a post on X.

Shahjahan Sheikh stands among the accused in the attack on the ED that occurred in Bengal’s Sandeshkhali on Friday. Subsequently, a LoC (lookout circular) against Sheikh Shahjahan was issued on Saturday. The BSF was put on alert to prevent any potential crossing into Bangladesh.
