Tripura Assembly Election Highlights: Voting for the 60 Assembly seats of Tripura began on Thursday. The fate of 259 candidates is in the fray. Polling is underway in a total of 3,337 polling stations. With 97 all-women police stations, adequate security arrangements have been made for the election. As many as 94,815 voters are in the age group of 18-19 years while 6,21,505 belong in 22-29 age group. The highest number of voters is in the 40-59 age group (9,81,089). The counting of votes in the state will take place on March 2.

This year, the three northeastern states – Nagaland, Tripura, and Meghalaya – will be the first ones to go to the polls. Assembly elections are also to be held in Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Chhattisgarh, Karnataka, and Telangana later in 2023.

On Thursday, a 69.96 per cent voter turnout was recorded till 3 pm in the ongoing polling in Tripura for 60 Assembly seats, the Election Commission (EC) informed.
The voter turnout recorded by the state stood at over 51.35 per cent at 1 pm, 32.06 per cent at 11am, and 13.69 per cent at 9 am.

A person allegedly suffered a leg injury during a clash between supporters of the ruling BJP and Opposition CPI outside a polling booth in Tripura, amid the ongoing Assembly elections in the state, the chief election officer of Tripura said on Thursday. The incident took place outside the Kalacherra polling station in Shantirbazaar Assembly constituency in the south Tripura district.
“The injured person was taken to a hospital by our officials,” the CEO Tripura, Kiran Gitte, informed in a tweet.

The BJP is contesting 55 assembly seats. Its ally IPFT has fielded candidates in six constituencies. The two parties will be having a friendly fight in one seat. On 47 seats, the Left Front is contesting, and the Congress party is fighting in 13 constituencies. The TMC has fielded nominees in 28 constituencies. In the state, there are 58 independent aspirants in the fray.

Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday urged the people of Tripura to vote “without fear” in the assembly polls, and asserted that they were united for change. Voting for the 60-member Assembly in Tripura began at 7 am on Thursday amid tight security.
“People of Tripura are united for change. Sincerely urge everyone, especially the youth to come out and participate in the festival of Democracy and vote for peace and progress,” Kharge said in a tweet. “Vote, without fear,” he added.
Union Home Minister Amit Shah has already expressed confidence in the BJP getting a full majority in the Tripura Assembly election. He said that the saffron party “is seeking a mandate to make the state prosperous in the next five years”. Recently, Amit Shah has also predicted – “you will see that before 12 PM on counting day, the BJP would have crossed the majority mark.”
Tripura has recorded 13.69 per cent voter turnout till 9 am, said Election Commission of India (ECI). 31 seats are needed for a majority in the state.
The Congress party and The Left Front which are considered arch-rivals have joined hands for the Tripura Assembly poll. They have even promised to reintroduce the old pension scheme in an attempt to woo the 1.88 lakh State government employees in Tripura.
On 22 March 2023, the tenure of 12th Tripura Assembly is scheduled to end. In February 2018, the previous assembly elections were held. After the election, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) formed the government, with Biplab Kumar Deb becoming the Chief Minister of the state.
