EY responds to employee’s death: Moments after Ernst and Young put out an official statement on Wednesday over the death of the 26-year-old employee, social media erupted with rage with many condemning the response and calling it “disappointing”. Anna Sebastian Perayil, a Chartered Accountant who was employed at S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, passed away on July 20 while receiving treatment at a hospital in Pune.
She was admitted after experiencing discomfort and expressing feelings of exhaustion. Her mother Anita had penned an emotional letter to EY’s India Chairman Rajiv Memani, where she had appealed for better working condition of the employees. The letter went viral on social media and was shared multiple times on LinkedIn, including by the former employees of the company.
In an official statement to the media, Memani responded: “Anna was a part of the Audit team at S R Batliboi, a member firm of EY Global, in Pune for a brief period of four months, joining the firm on 18 March 2024. That her promising career was cut short in this tragic manner is an irreparable loss for all of us. While no measure can compensate for the loss experienced by the family, we have provided all the assistance as we always do in such times of distress and will continue to do so.”
Earlier, speaking to the Indian Express Memani had said that EY employs approximately 1 lakh people and everyone has to work hard. He further added Anna had worked with the member firm for four months.
Memani stated that he has addressed the letter sent to him by Anita Augustine, assuring her of his full support. He emphasized that in addition to providing immediate assistance, he is committed to implementing further measures aimed at bettering the existing systems.
Anita Augustine in her letter claimed that her daughter had worked tirelessly at the company. She said that the workload, new environment, and long hours took a toll on her physically, emotionally, and mentally. Anita also claimed that Anna was experiencing anxiety, sleeplessness, and stress soon after joining, but she kept pushing herself.
