Senior Congress leader and Thiruvananthapuram MP Shashi Tharoor reaffirmed his commitment to liberalism and India’s pluralistic ethos amid ongoing speculations about his political future. In an interview with The Indian Express, Tharoor dismissed any possibility of joining the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), citing stark ideological differences.
“I have always been a classic liberal. I oppose communalism and believe in social justice alongside economic growth,” Tharoor stated. He emphasised his belief in a diverse and inclusive India, a principle that remains central to his political stance.
Intra-party differences
Tharoor acknowledged that he faces opposition within his party but insisted that his focus remains on India’s progress. “Some in my party oppose me, but I speak for India and Kerala’s future,” he said. Despite internal disagreements, he reiterated his loyalty to Congress and expressed willingness to take on greater responsibilities if needed.
Future in politics
While Tharoor has announced that this will be his last parliamentary campaign, he remains open to contributing in different capacities. “I didn’t enter politics as a career,” he noted, referencing his previous tenure at the United Nations before joining Congress at the invitation of Sonia Gandhi and Manmohan Singh.
He expressed a readiness to serve the party where needed but also highlighted alternative avenues. “If the party wants to utilise my strengths, I’ll be there. If not, I have other options,” he said, pointing to his writing and global speaking engagements.
