Delhi CM Oath-Taking Ceremony Highlights: Rekha Gupta sworn-in as new CM; Parvesh Verma asked ‘if he’s upset’, he responds

Delhi Chief Minister-designate Rekha Gupta on Thursday reaffirmed the BJP government’s commitment to fulfilling its poll promise of providing Rs 2,500 in monthly financial assistance to women.

Gupta announced that the first installment of this support would be credited to beneficiaries’ accounts by March 8, coinciding with International Women’s Day, PTI reported.

Gupta, who was officially elected as the BJP legislature party leader on Wednesday, emphasised that delivering on promises remains her top priority.

“Fulfilling Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision is the responsibility of all 48 BJP MLAs in Delhi. We are fully committed to delivering on every promise, including financial support for women. The assistance will definitely reach their accounts by March 8,” she assured.

The newly formed Council of Ministers, led by Rekha Gupta, is expected to hold its first meeting at the Delhi Secretariat around 3 pm, PTI reported quoted sources as saying. The government may roll out key welfare schemes, including the Mahila Samriddhi Yojna, which provides eligible women with a monthly payment of Rs 2,500 and the Ayushman Bharat health insurance scheme.

A former Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president and municipal councillor, Gupta is set to become Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister, following Sushma Swaraj, Sheila Dikshit, and Atishi.

The BJP secured a landslide victory in the February 5 Assembly elections, winning 48 out of 70 seats, ending the decade-long rule of Arvind Kejriwal’s Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in the national capital.

First-time MLA Rekha Gupta, set to become Delhi’s fourth woman Chief Minister, has deep roots in the Rashtriya Swayamsevak Sangh (RSS) and began her political journey with the Akhil Bharatiya Vidyarthi Parishad (ABVP), the Sangh’s student wing. The 50-year-old will take over from AAP’s Atishi.

Following the announcement of her name, the Shalimar Bagh legislator expressed gratitude on X, stating, “I thank the BJP’s national leadership and the legislature party.”

Gupta’s political career began in student politics, where she was elected Delhi University Students’ Union (DUSU) president in 1996-97. She later held key positions in the Bharatiya Janata Yuva Morcha (BJYM), serving as the Delhi unit secretary and later as BJYM’s national secretary.

A lawyer by profession, Gupta stepped into electoral politics in 2007, winning the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) elections from the North Pitampura ward.

BJP leader Rekha Gupta is set to be sworn in as Delhi’s ninth Chief Minister on February 20. The Shalimar Bagh MLA will become the fourth woman CM of the national capital.

Gupta has joined the ranks of Sushma Swaraj (BJP), Sheila Dikshit (Congress) and Atishi (AAP)—the three women who have previously led Delhi over the past three decades.

More than 25,000 security personnel and over 15 companies of paramilitary forces have been deployed across Delhi ahead of the new Chief Minister’s oath-taking ceremony at Ramlila Maidan on Thursday, a Delhi Police officer told PTI.

“We have deployed over 25,000 police personnel along with 15+ paramilitary companies,” the officer stated, adding that “robust” security measures have been put in place to ensure law and order during the event.

After nearly 30 years, the BJP has made a strong comeback in Delhi, ending the AAP’s rule. Rekha Gupta has been appointed as the new Chief Minister, with her oath-taking set for February 20.

However, the new government faces major challenges, including:

– Fulfilling poll promises – BJP pledged Rs 2,500 for women by March 8 and Rs 21,000 for pregnant women. Delivering these on time will be crucial.

– Water and electricity crisis – Ensuring clean drinking water and uninterrupted power supply amid ongoing shortages.

– Air Pollution – Implementing long-term solutions like green initiatives and better waste management to combat Delhi’s worsening air quality.

– Law and order – Improving women’s safety and policing, with no room for blame-shifting.

– Balancing welfare and finances – Sustaining AAP-style free services while maintaining financial stability.

BJP leaders Parvesh Verma, Manjinder Singh Sirsa, Ravindra Kumar Indraj, Kapil Mishra, Ashish Sood, Pankaj Kumar Singh have been appointed as cabinet ministers in Delhi’s new government. They will take oath with CM-designate Rekha Gupta at the Ramlila Maidan today.

Approximately 50,000 people, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, his Cabinet colleagues and chief ministers of NDA-governed states, are expected to attend the oath-taking ceremony. Key political figures such as Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena, Home Minister Amit Shah, Union Ministers and other prominent leaders will also be present.

Following the official formalities and notifications, the L-G will administer the Oath of Office and Oath of Secrecy to the newly appointed Chief Minister and Council of Ministers.

The oath-taking ceremony for Delhi’s new Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to commence at 10 AM on February 20 at Ramlila Maidan. Lieutenant Governor (L-G) VK Saxena will administer the oath of office to the Chief Minister-designate and the Council of Ministers at 12:35 PM.

The Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) on Wednesday appointed first-time MLA Rekha Gupta as the Chief Minister of Delhi. With this decision, she becomes the fourth woman to hold the position in the national capital’s history.
