Businessman Robert Vadra on Thursday said that people of Amethi want him to represent their constituency as they are angry with incumbent MP and BJP leader Smriti Irani.

“The people of Amethi expect me to represent their constituency if I decide to become a member of Parliament,” Vadra, who is the husband of Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi, said.

Amethi has been the bastion of the Gandhis, until Irani won from the constituency in the 2019 general elections.

Taking a swipe at Irani, Vadra said, “For years, the Gandhi family worked hard in Rae Bareli, Amethi and Sultanpur…The people of Amethi are really troubled by the current Member of Parliament, they think they have made a mistake by electing her.”

Extending support for Priyanka Gandhi, he said that he wants his wife to become MP first, and he will then follow.

“I interact with people and there are MPs from different parties. They (MPs) ask me to come along with their party and ask me the reasons for the delay. They also assure me of their support…So different parties across the country are asking me to come along…I have friendships with a lot of people above the party lines,” Vadra said.

The Congress, which has so far announced that it will contest from 17 out of the 80 Lok Sabha seats in the state, and leave other for its allies, including Samajwadi Party. The party has declared names of candidates from 14 constituencies, while candidates for Amethi and Rae Bareli have not been announced.
