The Rupee fell 28 paise to a record low of 90.43 against the US dollar in early trading on Thursday. The fall came amid foreign investors pulling out large sums of money and a restrained intervention from the Reserve Bank of India.

Forex traders have said that the rupee faced continued pressure because of high demand for dollars from importers and the central bank’s cautious approach ahead of the upcoming Monetary Policy Committee (MPC) meeting, reported PTI. Rupee’s fall has also triggered a number of reactions from the Opposition who have left no stone unturned to flag the issue.

‘Economic condition of this country is not good,’ says Kharge

Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge on Thursday said that the economic condition of India is not good. “They always say that we are developing and the economic condition is good. But when the Rupee falls, it shows what your economic condition is,” Kharge said to the media outside the Parliament.

‘What is their answer now?’ asks Priyanka Gandhi

Congress general secretary Priyanka Gandhi Vadra also slammed the BJP on Thursday after the rupee fell past the 90-mark against the US dollar, hitting a record low of 90.43 in early trading.

Speaking to reporters at Parliament, she pointed out that the BJP had commented on the dollar’s rise during Manmohan Singh’s tenure as Prime Minister and asked what their explanation is now. She suggested that the BJP should answer for the current situation instead of questioning her.

Rupee is falling because of it’s ‘strength and weight’: Mahua Moitra mocks the govt

Trinamool Congress MP Mahua Moitra mocked the government, suggesting that the rupee’s “strength and weight” is causing it to fall. She shared a post on X with a graphic showing Prime Minister Modi looking at the declining currency value.

“If something is heavy, it will fall. Our rupee has strength & weight. That’s why it’s falling,” she said in her post.

‘Whose age is Rupee equal to now?’ asks Manish Tewari

Congress MP Manish Tewari on Thursday reminded people of when the BJP had mocked the UPA government over the falling rupee and noted that the current exchange rate has now gone beyond even Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s age.

He recalled that in 2013, BJP spokesperson Ravi Shankar Prasad had said, “The worth of the Indian rupee against the dollar was equivalent to Rahul Gandhi’s age when the United Progressive alliance (UPA) came to power. Today it is equal to Sonia Gandhi’s age, and very soon it will touch Manmohan Singh’s age.”

Referring to this statement, Tewari asked the BJP whose age the rupee now equals, given it has fallen to 90.19 against the US dollar, and shared this comparison on X.
