The 39-member parliamentary panel on “One Nation, One Election” will hold its first meeting January 8, initiating discussions on a key electoral reform proposed by the BJP-led NDA government.
The Joint Committee on bills for simultaneous elections to the Lok Sabha and state assemblies is chaired by BJP lawmaker P P Chaudhary. According to parliamentary sources, the inaugural meeting is expected to focus on briefing members about two bills central to the initiative: the Constitution (129th Amendment) Bill and the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill.
Both bills were introduced in the Lok Sabha last week and referred to the committee on the final day of the Winter Session.

The panel’s strength was increased from 31 to 39 after more political parties requested inclusion in the discussions.
The committee comprises 27 Lok Sabha members and 12 Rajya Sabha members, including prominent names like former Union ministers Anurag Thakur and Parshottam Rupala, Congress leader Manish Tewari, and first-term MPs Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, Bansuri Swaraj, and Sambit Patra.
The bills aim to facilitate simultaneous elections, a long-standing promise of the BJP, and their deliberation is expected to shape the future of India’s electoral landscape.
