Odisha Panchayat Election Results Live, Odisha Election Result 2022 Live Updates: On the third and final day of counting in 229 Zilla Parishad zones, the BJD is set to dominate the local body polls leading in 734 seats while the BJP being a distant second with 42 seats. The Congress has 35 seats in its kitty while the Independents are ahead on eight seats. With the resounding victory, the BJD has again proved its mettle in the polls while the saffron party has failed to retain a majority of the seats it won in the 2017 polls. The counting of votes for 229 Zila Parishad zone seats will be held tomorrow, i.e. February 29.
While the BJD decimated the rivals, the opposition BJP which performed very well in the previous 2017 panchayat elections in the districts of Mayurbbhanj, Kalahandi and Malkangiri, failed to retain the seats. The BJP, which had won 49 of 56 ZP seats in Mayurbhanj in the 2017 panchayat elections, failed to live up to its expectation. While Union Minister Bishweswar Tudu had campaigned for the BJP, BJD’s organising secretary Pranab Prakash Das turned the tides in favour of the ruling party. Similarly, in Kalahandi, the BJP candidates won only 4 seats while the party had won 33 ZP seats in 2017 elections. The BJD, which had won 1 ZP seat in 2017, won 10 seats. The BJD had won 651 ZP zones in 2012 and 476 in 2017.

The ruling BJD staged a clean sweep in 10 districts – Bhadrak, Deogarh, Jagatsinghpur, Jajpur, Jharsuguda, Kendrapada, Malkangiri, Nayagarh, Puri and Subarnapur. The polling was held in five different phases on February 16, 18, 20, 22, and 24. The overall voter turnout was 78.6 per cent this time, slightly better than the 78.03 per cent in 2017. A total of 2.2 lakh candidates contested in the elections. The SEC had declared 36,523 ward members, 126 sarpanches, 326 panchayat Samiti members, and one Zilla Parishad member as uncontested winners. While party symbols were used only for the ZP seats, the candidates contested for the post of Sarpanch, Ward Members and Samiti Member in different systems.
