The reason a smartphone battery may catch fire is due to its rapid heating while charging or during heavy usage. The chemical composition of a phone battery can become damaged, leading to a chain reaction known as thermal runaway. Typically, if the batteries are old or faulty, excessive heat can trigger a volatile reaction, potentially resulting in an explosion. The police are investigating whether this was indeed the cause of the blast.
