With the latest development of CCTV footage reportedly showing Mishel Shaji walking towards the Goshree bridge, the suicide theory that was first put forth by the Kerala police seems to be gathering strength. The glitch is that the visuals show a girl walking towards the bridge. It does not show clearly that the girl is Mishel Shaji. However, the police insist this is a case of suicide.
The mysterious case of Mishel Shaji’s disappearance after attending Church led Kerala police to track 26-year-old Cronin Alexander, who reportedly said that he had nothing to do with his ‘girlfriend’s’ suicide.
In his statement to the Magistrate, Cronin had said that he had faced minor issues in their relationship but nothing that would drive his girlfriend to suicide. In his statement, Cronin also made it clear that he is not responsible for her suicide.
Mishel Shaji’s dead body was found near the Ernakulam Wharf. Her family members ruled out any possibility of suicide though the police seemed to insist on it.
Police found that on the afternoon she died, Mishel had spoken to Cronin’s mother at 3.30 PM. His mother had sent her a message and Mishel had called back on that number. According to the police, Cronin’s mother told them that she had done this on account of her son, whose calls had been rejected by Mishel.

However, Mishel’s father has rubbished this and raised 5 questions that the Kerala police have not been able to answer:
1. Mishel had spoken to her parents that day and she did not sound upset or unhappy. Then what happened to Mishel after she left the St Antony’s Church Kaloor on the evening she disappeared?
2. Mishel had never spoken to any of her family members about being in a relationship with Cronin. However, Mishel’s friends had hinted to her family members earlier that Cronin had been harassing her. If she was in a relationship with Cronin, why did she never mention it to any family members?
3. Assuming that Mishel had been in a relationship with Cronin as the police are now saying, why is there no SMS or message sent by Mishel to Cronin? No such SMS or message records have been found from her phone.
4. Later when a complaint about her disappearance was made at the Central police station on March 5th, the police had not taken any action. If they had at least tried to track her mobile phone, she may have been still alive. Why did the police not commence search operations then and there? Why did the police wait till the following day?
5. Despite Mishel’s family giving Kerala police all the information they had, it was up to them to collect the CCTV visuals that showed two men following her on a motorcycle after she stepped out of the Church. Why did the police not do something as basic as this as part of their probe?

Mishel’s disappearance and her family’s statements about police apathy shown in this case triggered a political uproar in Kerala state assembly, following which Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan gave an assurance that any leniency that is proven on the part of the concerned police officers would be probed and punished and he also announced that the Crime Branch would probe Mishel’s death.
