Meghalaya Assembly Election Result 2023 Highlights: The Meghalaya Assembly election results 2023 have delivered a hung verdict with no party in a position to form a government on its own. As per Election Commission data, the National People’s Party has won 20 seats and is leading on 6 seats, emerging as the single-largest party in the state. The United Democratic Party is at second spot with 11 seats under its belt, followed by the Trinamool Congress and the Congress party at 5 seats each. The Bharatiya Janata Party, Hill State People’s Democratic Party, People’s Democratic Front and Independents have won 2 seats each while the Voice of the People Party has bagged 4 seats. Results for 53 seats have been declared and six are still awaited. The majority mark required to form a government is 30.

Chief Minister Conrad Sangma has dialled Union Home minister Amit Shah seeking support to form a government in the state after the results threw a fractured mandate. The NPP and the BJP had contested the last elections together and formed a government but broke ties to contest alone ahead of the elections. Sangma had said after the elections that he was open to alliances in the interest of providing a stable government in the state. Sangma met Assam CM Himanta Biswa Sarma on Wednesday to discuss a possible alliance. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Narendra Modi took to Twitter to thank the people of the state and promised to continue working towards the development trajectory of the state.

The unfolding scenario is in line with what most exit polls had predicted – a hung Assembly in Meghalaya, with the ruling NPP emerging as the single-largest party in the state, but short of a majority. Sangma has signalled that he is keeping his options open in the interest of providing a stable government in the state.

Meghalaya recorded a voter turnout of 85.25 per cent among 21 lakh eligible voters. A total of 369 candidates are in fray in the state in 59 of the 60 assembly seats. While the ruling NPP is hopeful to retain power in the state, it faces a challenge from the BJP, the NPP and the Trinamool Congress. Voting for the 59 seats concluded peacfeully on February 27, officials said.
