Renewable push

Apropos of the column “Making the most of the renewable opportunity” (FE, December 15) renewable energy is actually the future. But innovation needs to be brought in areas of project implementation for renewable energy. The author pointed out that putting up small solar projects on the sturdy transmission towers of PowerGrid is a good idea. In fact, it is a great one—along with installing solar panels on highways and alongside railway tracks. If transmission was not a concern and if solar panels were not as expensive as they today are, perhaps the insolation India receives can power the whole world. The learnings in renewable energy we can get while setting up our planned smart cities should also be replicated to other segments in India. All this will take time, but we have to be on the right path. The right path will ensure we achieve energy security soon.

Make in India

Apropos of the news report “Gionee ready to ‘Make in India’, seeks policy clarity from Narendra Modi govt” (FE, December 15), that a mobile phone manufacturing company wants to make in India bodes well for the sector. India, which it is one of the biggest mobile phone markets in the world, doesn’t stand anywhere as far as mobile phone manufacturing is concerned. Isn’t it ironic? After Gionee’s announcement, it is quite possible that other companies also follow suit. And as far as “complete clarity on the policy from the Indian side” is concerned, we are hopeful that the new government will act accordingly. Think of the number of jobs such manufacturing will create.
