President Droupadi Murmu appointed Modi as the prime minister-designate on Friday after Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) chief J P Nadda handed her a letter on Modi’s election as the leader of the BJP Parliamentary Party and NDA leaders submitted their letters of support. In the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, the saffron party won 240 seats, falling short of the halfway mark in the 543-member House, but the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) together won 293 seats, a comfortable majority in the lower House.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) leaders have arrived at party chief N Chandrababu Naidu’s residence in Vijayawada, Andhra Pradesh, ANI reported.
Telugu Desam Party chief N Chandrababu Naidu is likely to postpone the swearing-in ceremony as Andhra CM in order to attend Narendra Modi‘s swearing-in as the Prime Minister.
TDP national spokesperson Prem Kumar Jain said, “Chandrababu Naidu extended his full support to the NDA yesterday…INDIA Alliance may say anything but we are with the NDA. Chandrababu Naidu’s oath ceremony (as Andhra Pradesh CM) will probably be held on June 12. PM has been invited, other leaders will also come.”

European Union Commission president Ursula von der Leyen congratulated Narendra Modi for his third consecutive win.
Replying to the EU Commission chief, Modi said, “Thank you Ursula van der Leyen. India-EU strategic partnership is defined by the depth of our shared democratic values, interests and the unlimited opportunities. Looking forward to elevate the India-EU ties to greater heights. Best wishes on behalf of the world’s largest democracy for the EU elections.”
With the ball in TDP chief Chandrababu Naidu and JDU chief Nitish Kumar’s court, demands for plum Cabinet berths are reportedly to be made as the talks commence over the formation of a BJP-led coalition government in the Centre.
On Wednesday, all NDA allies, including Naidu and Nitish Kumar, pledged their support for PM Modi’s third term. Modi has now tasked JP Nadda and Amit Shah with carrying out deliberations for the formation of the Union Cabinet.
A special category status for Andhra Pradesh, Cabinet berths including for his son in the new government, and funds for the Amaravati capital city he had originally planned, will be among the key demands that N Chandrababu Naidu‘s Telugu Desam Party (TDP) will likely keep on the table.
Nitish Kumar’s Janata Dal (United) – second only to TDP in its heft in the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) – plans to leverage the 12 Lok Sabha seats it won to negotiate plum portfolios in the new Cabinet, including the coveted railway ministry, it is learnt. Read more
Along with Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina, invitations have also been sent out to Sri Lankan President Ranil Wickremesinghe, Nepal Prime Minister Pushpa Kamal Dahal and Bhutan King Jigme Khesar Namgyel Wangchuck for the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi. Mauritius PM Pravind Jugnauth is also likely to be invited.
Bangladesh Prime Minister Sheikh Hasina is among the foreign leaders to who will attend the swearing-in ceremony of Narendra Modi as the Prime Minister for a third consecutive term.
According to media reports, Hasina is scheduled to depart for Delhi on June 7.
After a satisfactory performance in Uttar Pradesh Lok Sabha elections, Congress leader Priyanka Gandhi congratulated party workers and appreciated their efforts after major gains in the state.
Taking to X, Priyanka Gandhi stated, “My salute to all my colleagues of UP Congress. I saw you working hard in the sun and dust, you did not bow down, you did not stop, you showed courage to fight in the toughest of times. You were tortured, false cases were filed against you, you were put in jail, you were repeatedly put under house arrest but you did not get scared. Many leaders left in fear, you remained firm.”
“You have reestablished an old ideal in today’s politics – that public issues are paramount, the price of ignoring them is heavy. Elections are of the public, it is the public who fights and it is the public who wins,” she added.
Congress won six seats in Uttar Pradesh as opposed to just one in the 2019 Lok Sabha elections. Furthermore, in alliance with Samajwadi Party (SP), the INDIA bloc made significant gains in the state with 37 seats for SP and six for Congress, taking their tally higher than the BJP.

When asked by a reporter if he is in the NDA, Chandrababu Naidu shot back and said, “We contested the elections together. Why do you doubt.” With the numbers stacked in favour of the ruling NDA, the INDIA bloc indicated a “wait and watch” approach after its old allies Nitish Kumar and N Chandrababu Naidu, who are now in the NDA, did not reciprocate to overtures and threw their weight behind Modi. Union Home Minister Amit Shah arrived at BJP chief JP Nadda’s residence to hold deliberations with NDA allies. Defence Minister Rajnath Singh is also present. The meeting comes a day after all the NDA allies pledged support for Narendra Modi as their leader.

Telugu Desam Party (TDP) chief Chandrababu Naidu and Janata Dal leader Nitish Kumar, whose combined 28 seats are needed to ensure the BJP‘s coalition stays above water, gave written letters of support to the BJP.
Naidu’s TDP won 16 Lok Sabha seats in Andhra Pradesh and JDU won up 12 seats in Bihar.
There were speculations that Naidu and Nitish Kumar were approached by the opposition INDIA bloc, which finished with 232 seats (40 shy of majority) and was exploring a government formation bid.
As the INDIA bloc huddled in Delhi on Wednesday, after stunning gains in the Lok Sabha elections with victory on 234 seats, Kharge said the opposition leaders resolved to continue their fight against the “fascist rule of the BJP led by Modi” even as they thanked the people for their overwhelming support to the bloc.
For now, the INDIA alliance parties have decided to be in the Opposition but Kharge they would take “appropriate steps at the appropriate time” to “realise people’s desire not to be ruled by the BJP’s government”.

After the National Democratic Alliance (NDA) partners elected Narendra Modi as their leader for the third consecutive term, senior BJP leaders Amit Shah and JP Nadda have been tasked to discuss the details of government formation with the allies, including TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu and Bihar Chief Minister and JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar.
Narendra Modi met President Droupadi Murmu earlier on Wednesday to tender his resignation and is set to meet her again with letters of support from NDA parties to stake claim to form the government on June 7 after deliberations took place among the NDA allies who pledged support for Modi.
In the recently held Lok Sabha elections, the NDA won 293 seats, with the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) alone winning 240 seats. With this tally, although far narrower than what the exit polls suggested, the formation of a new coalition government at the Centre is imminent. According to media reports, the oath-taking ceremony will now take place on June 9, instead of earlier decided date of June 8. Narendra Modi is set to assume the Prime Minister’s Office for the third consecutive term. The new Cabinet of Modi 3.0 is also likely to take oath on the same day.
