Rohini Acharya, daughter of RJD chief Lalu Prasad Yadav, announced on Saturday that she is quitting politics. Her decision came just a day after the RJD-led Mahagathbandhan suffered a major defeat in the Bihar Assembly elections.

In a surprising move, she also said she is cutting ties with her own family. She shared her decision on X (formerly Twitter), taking full responsibility for everything.

“I am quitting politics and I am disowning my family…This is what Sanjay Yadav and Rameez had asked me to do…and I am taking all the blame,” she wrote in her post.

Who are Sanjay Yadav and Rameez named by Acharya?

Sanjay Yadav is an RJD Rajya Sabha MP and is among Tejashwi Yadav’s most trusted aides, while Rameez Alam is known to be Tejashwi’s old friend from a political family in Uttar Pradesh, according to several media reports.

However, Acharya’s post did not clarify what exactly the two had said to her. She has been a known figure within the party. Earlier she donated a kidney to her father a few years ago.

Political reactions to Rohini’s decision

Acharya’s announcement triggered strong reactions across the political circle. “The daughter (Rohini Acharya) who saved the life of Lalu Yadav is now saying in pain that she is quitting the party and disowning the family. It is a big question on Lalu Yadav and Rabri Devi,” news agency PTI reported, quoting Neeraj Kumar, JD(U) leader.

BJP leader Ram Kripal Yadav stated the issue should be treated as an internal matter. “This is her family matter. The feud is happening in front of everyone, and all are witnessing it. I do not want to comment further on it,” he said, declining to elaborate on the developments, reported ANI.

“All the promises they (RJD) made were false. So this was bound to happen,” JD(U) leader Shweta Gupta said responding to Acharya’s decision, ANI reported.

Tej Pratap’s expulsion and family rift

The internal tensions in Lalu Prasad’s family also resurfaced in public memory. Notably, Lalu had recently expelled his elder son Tej Pratap Yadav from the party over a social media post.

Following his expulsion, Tej Pratap launched a new platform called “Team Tej Pratap Yadav” and later formed the Janshakti Janata Dal. He even fielded a candidate against his younger brother Tejashwi Yadav from Raghopur. At that time, Acharya had publicly supported Tej Pratap, writing on X:

“May you achieve all the success and happiness in the world, and continue to shine brightly, my brother. Tons of good wishes, love, and blessings.”

But Tej Pratap’s new party failed to win a single seat, and he himself lost from Mahua, a seat he had previously won in 2015.

Was Acharya unhappy with Tej Pratap’s expulsion?

There had been speculation that Acharya was “unhappy” about Tej Pratap’s expulsion. However, during the Assembly election campaign, she was seen actively supporting Tejashwi Yadav.

Rohini Acharya, a medical graduate, lives in Singapore with her husband and children. She commands huge respect among RJD supporters for donating a kidney to her father and has long been considered a significant voice inside the party.
