At least nine people, including six from the same family, died while 10 others were rescued after a massive fire engulfed a five-storeyed residential building in the Bazarghat area of Hyderabad’s Nampally on Monday morning.

Vikram Singh Mann, Additional CP, Hyderabad, stated, “Highly inflammable chemicals were stored on the ground floor, and nine persons have died of asphyxiation when fire and smoke quickly spread through the building,” as reported by Indian Express.

“The fire is now under control, and action will be taken after the investigation,” Mann added.

According to the fire officer on the ground, an emergency call was made to the control room around 9.34 am from a caller claiming a car was set ablaze on the streets.

“When we reached, the fire had started spreading fast. The fire originated from the cellar where chemical drums were stored,” he said.

The initial fire on the ground floor utilised as a garage, produced thick black smoke on the first and second floors, causing asphyxiation for at least six people.

“The fire could have started while the repair of a car was taking place, or sparks from firecrackers caused it, and the diesel drums, which were nearby, caught fire. It appears that within a few seconds, the fire spread to the first and second floors,” the officer said.

Meanwhile, Telangana CM KCR offered condolences on the deaths in the Nampally fire incident, advised the authorities to provide better medical care to the seriously injured, and urged them to be vigilant, taking appropriate measures.

Union Minister G Kishan Reddy also visited the apartment complex godown fire site .
