In 2013, Samajwadi Party MLA Arun Verma along with seven other people was accused of raping a 22-year-old woman. The police on Monday said that the woman was found murdered near her house in Sultanpur on Saturday night and the body was found near a primary school in Jaisinghpur on Sunday. According to police officials, the injury mark around her neck suggested that she was strangled to death. The body has been sent for postmortem to ascertain the cause of death. Meanwhile, an FIR has been registered regarding the same.

The father of the deceased woman said that around 7 pm on Saturday, the woman went to use washroom but she didn’t return as reported by NDTV. The family called the police and later the police found her body after searching the area.

Though the Samajwadi lawmaker who was cleared by the police in the investigation hit out at allegations that he had a role in the incident and called it as a political conspiracy during elections in the state.

The woman had alleged that the local MLA, who is also the SP’s Sultanpur candidate for the February 27 polls and seven others had gang raped her in September 2013. A case of gang-rape was filed against the politician and others accused.

During investigations, it was found that at the time of the incident Verma’s phone was in Lucknow. His name was not included in the police charge-sheet and later he was absolved of any involvement. The father of the woman said they were given police protection on a High Court order but it was later withdrawn. The case is still in court.
