The rising level of toxic foam and pollution in Yamuna has had its effect on the water supply in several parts of Delhi. An official statement confirmed that at least 27 key locations, including major government headquarters, will face water outages on Sunday, The Indian Express reported.
Affected neighborhoods include Jor Bagh, Lodhi Colony, Golf Links, Pandara Road, the High Court vicinity, East and West Kidwai Nagar, Tughlaq Crescent, Ravinder Nagar, Khan Market, Lodhi Estate, Akbar Road, Amrita Shergill Marg, Dr. APJ Abdul Kalam Road, Prithvi Raj Road, and Tees January Road, among others.
The accumulation of toxic foam in the Yamuna has forced the shutdown of the Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant, severely impacting potable water availability managed by the New Delhi Municipal Council (NDMC) and the Delhi Jal Board.
Built in 2004, the Sonia Vihar Water Treatment Plant supplies water to nearly 3.5 million residents, processing water sourced from both the Ganga and Yamuna rivers. However, increasing ammonia levels in the Yamuna have disrupted the plant’s raw water intake, leading to widespread shortages in NDMC areas. The NDMC, which depends on 125 million litres per day (MLD) from the Wazirabad, Chandrawal, and Sonia Vihar treatment plants, has been facing challenges in maintaining a consistent supply.
To address the crisis, the NDMC has deployed three water tankers, each with a capacity of 9,000 liters, to supply water to VIP areas.
Since October 23, the government housing in East Kidwai Nagar has been reeling under intermittent water shortages. The residents were alerted about disruption of water supply for five hours on October 23. By October 25, the limited supply hours were extended by another hour.
Disruptions have also been reported at the Type 3 President’s Estate Quarters near Gole Market.
