Delhi Election Assembly Results 2025 Highlights: Who will be Delhi CM? BJP leaders meet LG after Atishi resigns as CM

The counting of votes have begun. The numbers will start showing on the official website of the Election Commission of India soon. Postal ballots are being counted first, followed by EVM votes. Delhi went to polls on February 5.

Delhi Police registered 1,100 cases of alleged Model Code of Conduct (MCC) violations and arrested or detained over 35,000 people in connection with these offences. The cases were filed between January 7, when the MCC was enforced, and February 6. Police have confiscated 477 illegal firearms, 538 cartridges, and arrested 499 people under the Arms Act.

Moreover, 1,15,103 litres of liquor were seized, along with 206.7 kg of drugs worth over Rs 77.9 crore and more than 1,200 banned injections. A total of Rs 11.70 crore in cash and 37.39 kg of silver were also recovered.

As per early trends, the BJP has taken lead over AAP. While the BJP is leading in 11 seats, the AAP in nine seats, as per Times Now. According to India Today, the BJP has taken lead in four seats, while AAP and Congress have not made any gains yet.

The counting of votes for the Delhi Assembly elections began at 8 AM. While exit polls have predicted a BJP comeback, the AAP have rejected the exit polls saying the final results will be known once the final results by ECI are delivered. The postal ballots will be counted first which is followed by the counting of EVM votes. The final results for the Delhi Assembly elections 2025 will be known once counting across all 70 constituencies is over.

The BJP has taken lead, as per early leads. According to Times Now, while BJP is leading in three seats, AAP is leading in two seats.

In the 2020 Delhi Assembly elections, the AAP was voted back to power securing 62 out of the 70 seats in the Delhi Assembly. The BJP bagged just eight seats, while the Congress could earn no seat.

In the 2015 Delhi elections, AAP had secured a landslide victory bagging 67 out of the 70 seats and the BJP just bagged three seats. The Congress secured no seat in the 2015 polls. Meanwhile, in the 2013 elections, the BJP had bagged 32 seats, the AAP secured 28 seats and Congress had bagged 8 seats.

AAP supremo and former Chief Minister of Delhi Arvind Kejriwal asserted that his party will secure 55 out of 70 Assembly constituencies. In a post on X, he had said earlier, “According to my estimate, the AAP is going to get 55 seats but if women put in a lot of effort — they should go out to vote and also convince the men in their family to vote for the AAP — then it can get more than 60 seats.”

Counting of votes across 70 Assembly constituencies begins. The main contenders in the Delhi battle are: AAP, BJP and Congress. While AAP is aiming at a fourth stint, the BJP is restlessly waiting for a comeback. The Congress is also confident of opening its account this time.

Congress leader and Kalkaji candidate Alka Lamba said, “Delhi people are demanding change, and certainly it will happen today. The voters of Delhi are tired of the misgovernance of the AAP government in power as well as the BJP. All development works that has stopped for the last years, the Congress will bring forth the change.” Alka Lamba is pitted against AAP candidate Atishi Marlena and BJP leader Ramesh Bidhuri from the Kalkaji seat.

Delhi Congress President Devender Yadav said that although exit polls were not in Congress’ favour, it will come to power. The Congress failed to open its account in the last two Delhi elections.

Campaigning for the Delhi Assembly election ended 48 hours before voting on February 5, featuring a high-stakes contest among the three main parties – AAP, BJP and Congress. The poll campaign by the AAP, BJP and Congress was marked by intense name-calling, AI-generated satire, and discussions surrounding issues like the “Sheesh Mahal” controversy, Yamuna’s water quality, and claims of voter list manipulation.

While governance, law and order, and women’s welfare were central themes, the pre-election discourse was largely shaped by promises of freebies.

The AAP is aiming for a third consecutive term in Delhi, focusing on its governance record and welfare initiatives. The upcoming Delhi Assembly election is viewed as a key test of AAP’s leadership under Arvind Kejriwal. Meanwhile, the BJP is determined to reclaim control of the capital after more than 25 years, and the Congress, which ruled Delhi for 15 years until 2013, is hoping for a comeback after failing to secure a single seat in the previous two elections.

After voting got over on February 5 at 6 PM, EVMs and VVPAT machines used in the Delhi polls have been kept in 70 strong rooms with a three-tier security system, Delhi Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) R. Alice Vaz had said. The strong rooms, one for each assembly constituency, are being safeguarded with stringent security measures as part of the Election Commission of India’s protocols, according to a statement by Delhi CEO. The strong rooms are being guarded by Central Armed Paramilitary Forces (CAPF) at the innermost perimeter, while the outer perimeter securing the state-armed police.

The EVMs and VVPAT machines are kept under 24*7 CCTV surveillance and are covered in sealed doors and corridors, and a double-lock system in place.

According to Election Commission of India data, a voter turnout of 60.42% was recorded till 11 30 PM on February 5, 2025. North-east Delhi district recorded the highest voter turnout percentage at 66.25%, while New Delhi district recorded a voter turnout of 57.13%. As per ECI, this is an approximate trend and the final voter turnout will be released by ECI soon.

All the 70 Assembly constituencies in Delhi went to vote on February 5. A total of 699 candidates are in the running in the Delhi polls. Polling took place at 13,755 stations across the 70 seats. As per Election Commission of India, the voter turnout percentage was recorded at 60.42% till 11 30 PM. After the conclusion of polling, the EVMs and VVPAT machines have been kept  in 70 strong rooms with a three-tier security in place.

Ahead of the counting of votes, Saurabh Bharadwaj offered prayers at a temple. Counting of votes will begin from 8 AM today.

Shikha Rai, BJP candidate from the Greater Kailash Assembly seat, Shikha also offered her prayers at the Kalkaji temple. She said that she is confident of her victory from the constituency.

AAP leader and Greater Kailash candidate Saurabh Bharadwaj said, “The Arvind Kejriwal-led AAP government has served people in the last 10 years…I am confident that AAP will come to power for the fourth consecutive term and Arvind Kejriwal will return as the Chief Minister. There is no question of hung Assembly this time.”

He added, “If there would be a hung Assembly, Sangh would get activated.”

Haryana AAP President Sushil Gupta expressed confidence that the AAP will form government in Delhi for the fourth time with an absolute majority.

“The public of Delhi trust the work of Arvind Kejriwal, his promises and they love him, ” Gupta told ANI.

On exit polls prediction, he said that the exit polls for 2013, 2015 and 2020 were proven wrong as AAP came to power for three consecutive terms.

While Axis My India predicted 45-55 seats for BJP, Today’s Chanakya predicted 45-57 seats for the saffron party. People’s Insight, Peoples Pulse, Poll Diary had also predicted a BJP win with numbers over 40. Meanwhile, Mind Brink Media, Wee Preside have predicted an AAP stint yet again.

Most exit polls have predicted a comeback for the BJP in Delhi over the AAP. The Congress is predicted to make no significant gains from the past polls. Exit polls are made by election survey agencies based on interview with voters after they have cast their votes. Notably, exit polls prediction could vary from the actual results. However, two exit polls have predicted AAP to hold its Delhi bastion, while the BJP is expected to make some gains.

From the AAP party, it is likely that Arvind Kejriwal would return as the Chief Minister of Delhi. Atishi Marlena is the present CM of the NCT. It would get interesting to see who would be BJP‘s pick for the Delhi if the party comes to power. However, the likely CM contenders from the BJP include Parvesh Verma, Manoj Tiwari, Harsh Vardhan. From the Congress party, Devender Yadav, Delhi Congress president is the likely CM contender.

The key seats to watch out for Delhi elections are New Delhi, Kalkaji, Jangpura, Okhla, Malviya Nagar, and more. From the New Delhi seat, AAP chief Arvind Kejriwal is up against BJP‘s Parvesh Verma and Congress leader Sandeep Dikshit. Delhi Chief Minister Atishi is contesting from the Kalkaji seat, and she is pitted against Alka Lamba from Congress party and Ramesh Bidhuri of the BJP. Former deputy Chief Minister Manish Sisodia is contesting from the Jangpura seat, and is up against Tarvinder Singh Marwah of BJP and Farhad Suri of Congress.

The Aam Aadmi Party (AAP), Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) and Congress are in a tight contest in the Delhi Assembly elections 2025. With AAP in power for three consecutive terms, the BJP has left no stone unturned this time to buck the trend and wrest power from AAP. Meanwhile, Congress, which has failed to open its accounts in the last elections, actively campaigned this time, to make gains this polls.
