A Delhi court is likely to hear Lok Sabha MP Sheikh Abdul Rashid’s application for regular bail on August 28. Rashid, who has been incarcerated since 2019, is seeking bail in connection with a 2017 Jammu and Kashmir terror funding case.
Rashid, also known as Engineer Rashid, won the Baramulla constituency in the 2024 Lok Sabha elections, defeating former Chief Minister Omar Abdullah.
On August 20, Additional Sessions Judge Chander Jit Singh issued a notice to the National Investigation Agency (NIA), directing it to respond to Rashid’s bail plea by August 28.
Previously, Rashid was granted custody parole on July 5 to take the oath of office. He has been held in Tihar jail since 2019 after being charged by the NIA under the Unlawful Activities (Prevention) Act in the alleged terror funding case. His name surfaced during the investigation of Kashmiri businessman Zahoor Watali, who is accused of financing terrorist groups and separatists in the Kashmir Valley.
The NIA has filed a charge sheet against several individuals in this case, including Kashmiri separatist leader Yasin Malik, Lashkar-e-Taiba founder Hafiz Saeed, and Hizbul Mujahideen chief Syed Salahuddin. Malik was sentenced to life imprisonment in 2022 after pleading guilty.
