Heavy rains continued overnight in Tamil Nadu’s Cauvery delta region. The India Meteorological Department (IMD) issued an alert on Wednesday (November 27), forecasting heavy to very heavy rainfall, with extremely heavy showers expected in parts of Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts, which are part of the delta area.

The system is expected to intensify into a cyclonic storm by November 27, bringing heavy to very heavy rains to Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts, with isolated places possibly experiencing extremely heavy rainfall. The IMD has issued a red alert for Cuddalore and Mayiladuthurai districts, warning of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday.

In addition, heavy to very heavy rain is likely to affect Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, and Pudukkottai districts, according to the IMD’s forecast.

The IMD’s Regional Meteorological Centre reported that the deep depression over the southwest Bay of Bengal, moving northwards at 13 km/h, was centered about 400 km southeast of Nagappattinam, 510 km southeast of Puducherry and 590 km south-southeast of Chennai.

IMD sounds heavy rainfall warning for next three days

Wednesday – The IMD has issued a Red Alert for Cuddalore, Mayiladuthurai districts, and Karaikal, predicting heavy to extremely heavy rainfall on Wednesday. An Orange Alert has been issued for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, Villupuram, Ariyalur, Thanjavur, Tiruvarur, Nagapattinam, Pudukkottai districts, and Puducherry, with expectations of heavy to very heavy rainfall. A Yellow Alert has been issued for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, Perambalur, Tiruchy, Sivaganga, and Ramanathapuram districts, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in these areas.

Thursday – Furthermore, the Met Office has issued an orange alert for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu, and Villupuram districts, forecasting heavy rainfall. A yellow alert has been issued for Ranipet, Tiruvannamalai, Kallakurichi, and Cuddalore districts, as well as Puducherry, indicating the possibility of moderate to heavy rainfall in these areas.

Friday – Yellow alert has been sounded for Chennai, Tiruvallur, Kancheepuram, Chengalpattu and Ranipet districts. 

Schools, colleges closed in Tamil Nadu

In response to the ongoing heavy rainfall, schools and colleges in several districts have been declared closed for November 27. These include Tiruvarur, Cuddalore, Nagapattinam, and Mayiladuthurai, while only schools in Chennai, Chengelpet, Ariyalur, and Kanchipuram will observe a holiday.
