Union Minister for Minority Affairs Kiren Rijiju on Tuesday accused West Bengal Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee of “inciting violence” with her recent remarks opposing the amended Waqf Act and apparently urging people to protest against it.
Speaking at a press conference, Rijiju questioned and condemned Banerjee’s decision to reject the implementation of the act in her state, calling it unconstitutional.
“How can she say she won’t implement it? She holds a constitutional post, and this is a law passed by Parliament—a constitutional body. It’s not a matter of choice,” he said. When asked about the recent episodes of violence linked to the Waqf (Amendment) Act in the state, Rijiju directly blamed the West Bengal CM. “By asking people to protest and refusing to comply with a law passed by Parliament, the Chief Minister is clearly inciting the violence,” Rijiju alleged.
Fresh violence reportedly erupted in the Bhangar area of South 24 Parganas district on Monday, following earlier disturbances in Murshidabad.
Murshidabad recently witnessed violent clashes following protests against the newly passed Act. Despite the state government’s refusal to implement the law, unrest escalated in the region where three individuals reportedly died. Following the violence, the Calcutta High Court ordered deployment of central forces. Internet services were also suspended in the area.
