Heavy to very heavy rainfall has been predicted in various parts of Garhwal division by the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) due to which the Uttarakhand government has postponed the Char Dham Yatra, which was earlier scheduled to commence from today, July 7. In fact, a bridge in Ramnagar collapsed due to heavy rains.

As per a report  by ANI, Vinay Shankar Pandey, the commissioner of Garhwal has issued orders in this regard. 

Due to heavy rains on Friday, a temporary bridge collapsed sweeping away two pilgrims while several others remained stranded in Devgad. The incident happened about 8-9 km ahead of Gangotri on the Gomukh footpath. 

What did the IMD predict?

As per the latest weather forecast by IMD, heavy to very heavy rainfall is expected in Uttarakhand for next two days. A red alert for heavy rainfall has been issued in Nainital, Bageshwar, Champawat, Almora, Pithoragarh and Udham Singh Nagar. 

Additionally, an orange alert has been issued for heavy rainfall in Dehradun, Haridwar, Tehri and Pauri district; while yellow alert has been issued for Uttarkashi, Chamoli and Rudraprayag district. 

CM Dhami advises…

Meanwhile, the chief minister of Uttarakhand, Pushkar Singh Dhami, has directed to be on high alert to all the district magistrates of concerned districts. Dhami also asked citizens to be cautious and stay in a safe place in order to protect themselves from probable disaster because of rain. 

In addition to this, he asked Vinod Kumar Suman, secretary disaster management and rehabilitation, among other officers associated with the disaster management department to keep an eye on all districts from the state emergency operation center of USDMA.
