Former Reserve Bank of India (RBI) Governor Shaktikanta Das has been appointed as the Principal Secretary-2 to Prime Minister Narendra Modi. The Appointments Committee of the Cabinet approved his selection, with the Department of Personnel and Training (DoPT) issuing an official order on Saturday.
His tenure will be co-terminous with the Prime Minister’s term or until further orders, whichever comes first. According to the order, Das’s tenure will be “co-terminus with the term of the Prime Minister or until further orders, whichever is earlier.” Shaktikanta Das served as RBI Governor for six years, including a three-year extension during his tenure.
A 1980-batch IAS officer from the Tamil Nadu cadre, Das took charge as RBI Governor in December 2018 and retired last year. During his six-year tenure, he navigated the central bank through significant challenges, including the economic fallout of the Covid-19 pandemic and the impact of the Russia-Ukraine war.
PK Mishra has been serving as the Principal Secretary to the Prime Minister since September 11, 2019.
In addition, the government has extended the tenure of NITI Aayog CEO BVR Subrahmanyam by one year, starting February 24, 2025, according to an official notification. Subrahmanyam, a retired IAS officer from the 1987 batch, was initially appointed as NITI Aayog CEO for a two-year term in February 2023.
