FEMA violation of Rs 5,551-cr: ED issues show-cause notices to Xiaomi, 2 senior executives, 3 foreign banks
The Enforcement Directorate (ED) on Friday said it has issued show-cause notices to Chinese mobile manufacturer Xiaomi, its chief financial officer and director Sameer Rao, former MD Manu Jain and three foreign banks for alleged foreign exchange violation of more than Rs 5,551 crore.
The adjudicating authority under the Foreign Exchange Management Act has issued show-cause notices to Xiaomi Technology India Private Limited, the two executives, CITI Bank, HSBC Bank and Deutsche Bank AG, the agency said in a statement. (PTI)
Forex reserves jump USD 5.9 bn to USD 595 bn
India’s forex kitty jumped USD 5.929 billion to USD 595.067 billion for the week ended June 2, the Reserve Bank said on Friday.The reserves had dropped for two consecutive weeks and declined by USD 4.34 billion to USD 589.14 billion in the previous reporting week.It can be noted that in October 2021, the country’s forex kitty had reached an all-time high of USD 645 billion. The reserves have been declining as the central bank deploys the kitty to defend the rupee amid pressures caused majorly by global developments. (PTI)
Train accident: Govt demolishes school used as morgue
The Odisha government on Friday began demolishing the 65-year-old Bahanaga High School building that was used as a temporary morgue for victims of Coromandel Express.
The demolition was being carried out in presence of the school managing committee (SMC) members and Public Works Department officials. The decision to raze the building was taken after the SMC said it was old and not safe and that kids were reluctant to attend classes in the school where bodies were kept. (PTI)
Coal mine collapses in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad
An illegal coal mine has reportedly collapsed in Jharkhand’s Dhanbad. PTI says that at least three people have died and many are feared to be trapped under the rubble.
Mild tremors reported from Ladakh
An earthquake of magnitude 3.9 jolted Ladakh and Jammu and Kashmir on Friday, the National Centre for Seismology (NCS) said. There was no report of any loss of life or damage to property, officials said. The earthquake struck at 10.23 am and lasted for a few seconds, the NCS said. The depth of the earthquake was 10 kilometers below the surface of the earth at latitude 35.64 degrees north and longitude 76.62 degrees east. Its epicentre was in Ladakh, officials said. PTI
Drone attack in Voronezh
Two people were wounded on Friday in an apparent drone strike in the southern Russian city of Voronezh, regional governor Alexander Gusev said. Voronezh is about 180 km (110 miles) from the Ukrainian border. (Reuters)
UP man arrested over ‘bomb call’
A male passenger, identified as Azeem Khan of Pilibhit in Uttar Pradesh who was onboard a Vistara flight to Dubai, arrested at Delhi airport on a complaint by a woman co-passenger. The woman had complained to a flight crew member that she heard the man speak of a bomb over the phone. The man was handed over to CISF and then arrested by Delhi Police. The incident happened on 7th June but nothing was found after investigation. The male passenger, Azeem Khan has been given a notice and allowed to go as nothing suspicious was found on him. If needed, he will have to join the investigation in future: Delhi Police
Relief for Kolhapur
Authorities have partly resumed the internet services in Kolhapur that witnessed clashes recently. CM Eknath Shinde had said that justice will be done and public should remain calm and not pay attention to unsubstantiated rumours.
HDFC Bank’s new roadmap
HDFC Bank Ltd will keep home loans at the centre of its growth strategy after a merger with HDFC Ltd is concluded, with such credit likely to make up nearly a third of the bank’s portfolio going forward, a Reuters report said. The pace of growth in home loans will broadly mirror growth seen in HDFC’s home loan portfolio, the first official said, declining to be identified as strategy discussions are not public. (REUTERS)
Tremors felt in Tezpur
An earthquake of magnitude 3.7 was reported from Assam on Friday. The National Center for Seismology says that the epicentre was 39km west of Tezpur.
Fire at Delhi hospital
A fire broke out at a hospital for newborns in New Delhi’s Vaishali Colony, news agency ANI reports. Nine fire tenders were rushed to the spot. All 20 newborns have been safely rescued by Delhi Fire Service and shifted to nearby hospitals.
Another train incident in Odisha
An AC coach of Durg-Puri Express reported of minor fire in Odisha’s Nuapada district, a PTI report said. The incident took place on Thursday night, the report added. It caused panic among people, the East Coast Railway said in a statement. It was a minor fire and no major damage has been reported so far. The ECoR, in a statement, said smoke was detected in the B3 coach of the train as it reached the Khariar Road station on Thursday evening.
