The University of Delhi will be holding student union elections on September 23 after 4 years of Covid disruption in Delhi. The university has also appointed a chief election officer to conduct elections in the university.

Buildings collapse after landslide in Kullu, Himachal Pradesh

A landslide in Shimla, Himachal Pradesh blocked the road to Mandi road which caused 8 buildings in Kullu to collapse and hundreds of travellers were stranded in relief camps after landslides. There has been no casualty recorded.

Ganga water level rises in Kanpur

The Ganga river in Kanpur has recorded an increased water level, in response, the government has issued an alert in villages like Chainpurwa, Gopalpurwa and Baniyapurwa villages. The water level is at 114.750 meters and likely affected areas are made available with Food items, medicines, drinking water, lights and other necessary items according to Kanpur District Magistrate Visakh Lyer.

Petrol Pump Owners Seek Removal of VAT

Petrol pump dealers from across the country have written to the Ministry of Petroleum, Government of India to increase dealers margins on petrol and diesel sales, since it has been six years since the last revision was done. They have also sought immediate removal of the old VAT and urged for replacing this with the GST.

UP drug dept seizes ‘large quantity’ of medicines, injections from Nigerian national

The Uttar Pradesh drug department has seized a large quantity of medicines and injections over suspicion of irregularities from a Nigerian national living in Greater Noida who wanted to send them to his country. The seized items include 20 different types of drugs including anti-cancer and blood-improving injections, and their samples have been taken for testing to confirm if they are adulterated, a senior drug department.

School teacher recruitment exams begin in Bihar

School teacher recruitment examinations has begun at 870 centres across Bihar, amid tight security. The tests are being conducted by the Bihar Public Service Commission (BPSC) and will continue till Saturday. More than 8 lakh aspirants have applied for the recruitment of 1,70,461 school teachers in the state.

BRICS on expansion spree

The BRICS group of nations has decided to invite six countries – Argentina, Egypt, Iran, Ethiopia, Saudi Arabia and the United Arab Emirates – to become new members of the bloc, South African President Cyril Ramaphosa said on Thursday.The debate over expanding the BRICS bloc, comprising Brazil, Russia, India, China and South Africa, has topped the agenda at a three-day summit in Johannesburg ending on Thursday.While all BRICS members have publicly expressed support for growing the bloc, there were divisions among the leaders over how much and how quickly. HC refuses to stay order upholding arbitral award in favour of Kalanithi Maran

The Delhi High Court on Thursday refused to stay a single judge order upholding an arbitral award asking Spicejet and its promoter Ajay Singh to refund Rs 579 crore plus interest to media baron Kalanithi Maran. A division bench of Justices Yashwant Verma and Dharmesh Sharma issues notice and sought response of Maran and his company Kal Airways on an appeal filed by Singh and Spicejet challenging the single judge’s July 31 order. WFI membership suspended by world federation over delayed elections

United World Wrestling (UWW), the world governing body for wrestling, has suspended the Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) for not conducting its elections on time, a development which will not allow Indian grapplers to compete at the upcoming World Championships under the Indian flag.

BRICS set to invite Saudi Arabia to join – Bloomberg News

Major emerging market nations are preparing to invite Saudi Arabia to join BRICS, Bloomberg News reported on Thursday, citing people familiar with the talks. Nuh violence accused held after gunfight with police

A man allegedly involved in the communal violence in Nuh was arrested after a brief encounter with police. The arrested accused was identified as Osama alias Pehelwan, resident of Ferozpur Namak village. According to police, so far 61 FIRs have been registered and 286 accused arrested in connection with the communal clashes that erupted in Nuh when the Vishva Hindu Parishad’s Braj Mandal Yatra was attacked by a mob on July 31.

Hundreds of people stranded as rains damage Kullu-Mandi road

There seems to be no end to the rain-related woes for Himachal Pradesh. Latest reports say that a big portion of Kullu-Mandi roads has been damaged due to the downpour. This has resulted in a massive traffic jam. Several hundred vehicles are stranded. People are complaining that there is no arrangement for those who are stuck. The situation has worsened as the alternative route via Pandoh is also damaged. PWD is working to restore the critical road.

North Korea spy satyellite launch: Problem occurrs in rocket’s third stage, state media says

North Korea’s second attempt to place a spy satellite in orbit failed on Thursday after the rocket booster experienced a problem with its third stage, state media reported, as space authorities vowed to try again in October. Its first try in May also ended in failure when the new Chollima-1 rocket crashed into the sea. The pre-dawn launch came in the first hours of an eight-day window that North Korea had announced for the attempt. (Reuters)

Eye on China! US nods to F-16 sale to Taiwan

The US State Department has approved a possible $500 million sale to Taiwan of infrared search and track systems for F-16 fighter jets, as well as other equipment, the Pentagon said on Wednesday. “The proposed sale of this equipment and support will not alter the basic military balance in the region,” it said in a statement. Beijing has repeatedly demanded the United States – Taiwan’s most important arms supplier – halt the sale of weapons to the island. (Reuters)
