The Bhartiya Janata Party (BJP) has made a massive comeback in Delhi, securing a majority in the assembly after more than 26 years. In this major victory, the party gained ground in several crucial constituencies, especially among Purvanchali, sum-dwellers communities, Jat and Sikh. This electoral victory has further cemented BJP’s influence on the national capital, sweeping its main rival, the Aam Aadmi Party (AAP.)

The BJP won from AAP by bagging 48 out of 70 assembly seats whereas Congress failed to open its account and continue its losing performance from the 2015 and 2020 elections. The party managed to win notable seats from areas near the Haryana border by claiming nine seats in a total of 11 constituencies despite AAP’s leader alleging the Haryana government of pollution in the Yamuna River.

BJP’s major gain in Purvanchali and Haryana areas

The BJP also made a stronghold in areas which are dominated by Purvanchali presence like Sangam Vihar, Laxmi Nagar, and Karwal Nagar where more than 15% of the electorates are from Bihar and Eastern Uttar Pradesh. The party has achieved 25 seats in total of 35. On a similar note, the party recorded significant triumph in Haryanvi voter base areas like Narela, Najafgarh, and Bijwasan where the party has secured 12 seats out of 13.

BJP’s presence in diverse communities

Moreover, the BJP has managed to gain its foothold in slum-dominated areas by acquiring four out of seven seats. It has also gained victory in four reserved constituencies out of 12 including Mangolpuri. Areas that are dominated by the Sikh population have bagged 3 seats out of four. The party has also secured 23 out of 28 seats in constituencies where there are more than 10% Punjabi voters. The party has also earned multiple seats among Jat, Jatav, Gujjar, and Valmiki voter bases.

BJP’s strategic plan

The BJP planning for candidate selection proved successful as six Purvanchali candidates contested this time and out of them four were declared winners. The BJP’s overall tally was further boosted as 12 out of 14 candidates won the battle.

In shaping BJP’s election results, border constituencies played a vital role. Out of 22 seats that are located near the boundary of Uttar Pradesh and Haryana, the party was announced as the winner in 16 of them. The party’s wider appeal and electoral strategy were dominant across multiple voter bases and geographical regions.
