Bihar CM Nitish Kumar Oath Ceremony: JD(U) leader Nitish Kumar has taken oath as Bihar’s Chief Minister for the tenth time, at Patna’s historic Gandhi Maidan. Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Minister Amit Shah, BJP president JP Nadda and other senior NDA leaders were present at the event. The Chief Ministers of several BJP-ruled states also attended the mega event.

Nitish Kumar sworn-in for 10th time

On Wednesday, all 202 NDA legislators met in the Central Hall of the Assembly and chose Nitish Kumar as their leader. He was welcomed with a large garland at the meeting, which was attended by Union Minister and BJP Bihar in-charge Dharmendra Pradhan, LJP (RV) chief Chirag Paswan, RLM leader Upendra Kushwaha and HAM(S) founder Jitan Ram Manjhi.

Earlier, the JD(U) had named Nitish as the head of its legislative party in a separate meeting. After the NDA meeting, he met Governor Arif Mohammed Khan, submitted his resignation as Chief Minister, and also claimed the right to form the new government. The current Assembly was dissolved on Wednesday.

Bihar’s new government formation

Earlier on Wednesday, during a meeting of the BJP’s newly elected MLAs, UP Deputy Chief Minister and party observer Keshav Prasad Maurya announced Samrat Choudhary as the leader of the BJP legislature party and confirmed Vijay Kumar Sinha as the deputy leader once again. This suggests both may continue as Deputy Chief Ministers.

Apart from Nitish Kumar, other leaders who took oath include Mangal Pandey, and Nitin Nabin. JD(U) has also retained key ministers such as Vijay Kumar Choudhary, Bijendra Prasad Yadav and Shravan Kumar.

For the LJP (RV), its three minister picks will likely represent different caste groups. The RLM is expected to nominate Sasaram MLA Snehlata, the wife of party chief Upendra Kushwaha, as a minister. HAM(S) is likely to continue with Santosh Kumar Suman, the son of Union Minister Jitan Ram Manjhi.

BJP insiders said the party negotiated strongly with the JD(U) to keep the Speaker’s post. Senior BJP leader and former minister Prem Kumar is likely to become the next Speaker.

The NDA returned to power on November 14 with a strong victory, winning 202 out of 243 seats in the Assembly. The BJP secured 89, JD(U) 85, LJP (RV) 19, HAM 5 and RLM 4 seats.
