Baba Siddique’s death: A day after former Maharashtra minister and Nationalist Congress Party leader Baba Siddique was shot dead in Mumbai, Chief Minister Eknath Shinde announced on Sunday to stage a state funeral in his honour.
Shinde instructed officials to organise the funeral with full state honours, acknowledging Siddique’s service as a minister in the Maharashtra Cabinet from 2004 to 2008 and as chairman of the Maharashtra Housing and Area Development Authority (MHADA).
NCP chief and Maharashtra Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar expressed shock over the killing of Baba Siddique, stating that the final rites will be conducted with full state honours at 8.30 pm tonight.
Meanwhile, Mumbai police have confirmed that jailed gangster Lawrence Bishnoi is involved in the killing of Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader and three-time MLA Baba Siddique on Saturday night.
Despite receiving Y-level security, Siddique was shot near Nirmal Nagar in Bandra and later succumbed to his injuries at Lilavati Hospital on Saturday night.
The Mumbai Crime Branch has registered a case at Nirmal Nagar Police Station in connection with the murder under various sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, Arms Act, and Maharashtra Police Act. The case has been logged as Crime Registration No. 589/2024, citing Sections 103(1), 109, 125, and 3(5) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita, as well as Sections 3, 25, 5, and 27 of the Arms Act, and Sections 37 and 137 of the Maharashtra Police Act.
The police have identified two suspects: Gurmail Singh from Haryana and Dharamraj Kashyap from Uttar Pradesh. Both were reportedly in Mumbai for one to two months, closely monitoring Siddique. They conducted reconnaissance of Siddique’s residence and office before the shooting.
