Cyclone Remal hit Assam
Several districts of Assam are on high alert due to a forecast of heavy to extremely heavy rainfall starting Monday, driven by the impact of Cyclone Remal, which recently made landfall in neighbouring West Bengal and Bangladesh, ANI reported.
The administration has advised people to follow safety measures and established emergency helpline numbers. Since late Sunday evening, several areas in Assam, including Guwahati, have experienced rainfall, bringing down the state’s soaring temperatures.
The India Meteorological Department (IMD) released a red alert on Monday for extremely heavy rainfall in different parts of Assam including, Chirang, Goalpara, Baksa, Dima Hasao, Cachar, Hailakandi and Karimganj districts, and an orange alert for Dhubri, South Salmara, Bongaigaon, Bajali, Tamulpur, Barpeta, Nalbari, Morigaon, Nagaon, Hojai and West Karbi Anglong.
Biswa has informed on X that, “In Guwahati, uprooted trees in places like Cotton University and Jyoti Chitraban caused no damage to people or buildings. Power supply is disrupted in lower Assam, including Guwahati. We are monitoring the situation and request everyone to stay indoors until the situation stabilizes.”
