After the February 27 election to fifteen seats of Rajya Sabha, spanning Uttar Pradesh, Himachal Pradesh and Karnataka, the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP)-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) is just four short of the majority mark of 121 in the 240-member House.
In the recently held elections, BJP won 10 won 10 Rajya Sabha seats — and 20 unopposed earlier. Fifty-six Rajya Sabha seats fell vacant in April.
With the recent victory of 30 more seats, the BJP’s tally in the Upper House is up to 97 seats and NDA to 117 seats.

With the NDA up to 117 members, they need four more members to make up the majority in the Upper House. The majority mark in the 245-member Rajya Sabha is 123. However, five seats are vacant — four in Jammu and Kashmir, which has been under the President’s Rule, and one in the nominated member category, the strength of the House is reduced to 240 and the majority mark to 121.
The BJP remains the largest party in the Rajya Sabha with 97 members, including five nominated MPs who joined the party, followed by the Congress with 29 members. The party that comes third in terms of number of MPs in the Upper House is Trinamool Congress with 13 MPs. The representation in the Upper House is mentioned below-
