With Punjab all set to witness the assembly elections tomorrow, the Election Commision, to ascertain proper voter verification, has introduced Voter Verified Paper Audit Trail (VVPAT) machines. The VVPAT machines will be used for the first time in the state on trial basis. Speaking on the use of the VVPAT machines the company CEO said that with the use of the machines only the voters can check who he voted for.

With hours left for the Punjab elections, the high-octane campaigning for the Punjab Assembly elections is finally over, as all the parties went all out to garner as many voters as possible. The fight is a three-way contest for a total of 117 assembly seats, between Shiromani Akali Dal and BJP alliance, Congress and Aam Aadmi Party. AAP will be contesting the Punjab elections for the first time and it will be doing so for 112 seats. Meanwhile, SAD has fielded candidates for 94 seats and BJP in 23 seats. Congress, however, will be contesting alone for all the seats. Lok Insaf Party, with which AAP has an alliance, will contest for 5 seats. The other parties in the fray are Apna Punjab Party, BSP, SAD-Amritsar and the left.

And while BJP has stepped up its game for the upcoming elections with an alliance with the Shiromani Akali Dal, it does not look like the national party is putting much force behind it. The people of Punjab, on the other hand, are in the midst of quite a few major crisis leading up to the elections. The state has been a victim to with farmer suicides, while the youth suffers from an excessive abuse of drugs. While the AAP has formed a strong base in the state with Arvind Kejriwal making promises of dealing with the drug problem and focussing on development, the Congress has tapped into their campaign by bringing former BJP MP Navjot Singh Sidhu to their side. The SAD-BJP alliance, however, has taken a different path with the Badals and the Prime Minister himself, blaming Congress and AAP for tarnishing Punjab’s image in the world with hyped stories of drug abuse.
