Himachal Pradesh election 2017: Bhartiya Janata Party on Tuesday announced senior leader Prem Kumar Dhumal as its chief ministerial candidate for upcoming assembly elections in the state. The announcement was made by party chief Amit Shah. “BJP will fight Himachal Pradesh election under the leadership of Shri Prem Kumar Dhumal,” Shah tweeted. “I am confident that under Dhumal Ji’s leadership, BJP will come to power with a massive majority,” Shah added. Dhumal is a two-time CM of Himachal Pradesh. His son, Anurag Thakur, is also a noted politician from the state and a BJP MP.

On Sunday,  Finance Minister Arun Jaitley had said that one of BJP’s very experienced leaders will be the Chief Minister in case the party wins.  “But it is a matter of strategy whether the party announces it or decides it after the elections,” Jaitley added.  Dhumal and Union minister JP Nadda were seen as two most likely choices for the post of chief minister in BJP. The voting in HP is scheduled to take place on 9th November while the counting will be done on 18th December.

The announcement comes two days after BJP had issued its vision document for the state in presence of top state leaders, including Prem Kumar Dhumal. Dismantling “mafia raj”, women’s safety, free ‘chardham’ pilgrimage for the elderly and jobs for youth were kept as key focus areas in the BJP’s “Vision Document” for the polls.

Safe drinking water to every house, raising of compensation for land acquired by the government for developmental projects, road connectivity to all villages, emergency medical services in rural and remote areas, doubling the income of farmers by 2022, social security pension  are other salient features of the document.
