Ahead of polling in Amethi on May 6, posters claiming that Congress president and local MP Rahul Gandhi was ‘missing’ from his parliamentary constituency appeared at different places. However, posters were pulled down on the orders of the Returning Officer following complaints from the local Congress leaders. It was, however, not clear who got the posters printed and pasted across the Amethi parliamentary constituency. The posters carrying photographs of people, asked, “15 years x 365 days = 5,475 days. Where was Amethi MP?” This was not the first time such posters appeared in Amethi. ‘Missing’ posters for Rahul have appeared several times since 2014.

The Amethi Lok Sabha seat is considered Congress’ stronghold. Rahul who is representing Amethin in Lok Sabha since 2004, is seeking fourth term from here. The BJP has fielded Smriti Irani against Rahul. Irani had lost elections to Rahul from Amethi by a thin margin.

Meanwhile, the Election Commission has given a third clean chit to PM Modi ruling that there was no violation of the model code of conduct in his Barmer speech where he said India is no longer afraid of Pakistan’s nuclear threats. It also ruled that Congress president Rahul Gandhi’s speech in Jabalpur did not violate the poll code. Rahul had in his speech made a reference to BJP president Amit Shah as a ‘murder accused’.
