Manipur Elections 2017: The Election Commission yesterday ordered an FIR to be registered against certain office bearers of the Manipur BJP and eight newspapers for publishing an advertisement without approval. While there is no bar on the publication of election advertisements 48 hours before the polling and without approval no newspaper will publish such advertisements, but ahead of the first phase of elections in Manipur, the advertisements were published yesterday.
The newspapers that the Commission identified were, Sangai Express – Manipuri and English editions – Echel Express, Naharolgi, Thoudang, People’s Chronicle, Imphal free press, Huiyen Lanpao and Poknapham. On the basis of a report by poll authorities in Manipur, the EC had directed the state chief electoral officer to get the FIRs filed yesterday.

Manipur is undergoing its first phase of two-phased elections today. 43% voter turnout recorded till 11 am of the Manipur first phase elections. 280 companies of central paramilitary forces and armed police of other states have been deployed for maintaining peaceful polling. With 38 constituencies going for polls, the elections is fought on 60 seats. A total of 2,794 polling stations have been set up across the state. People are seen standing in long queues in front of the polling booths. Women voters were also seen in large numbers. An electorate of 19,02,562 comprising 9,28,573 male voters and 9,73,989 female voters are eligible to exercise their franchise. There are around 45,642 new voters. 837 polling stations have been identified as hyper sensitive and 529 as sensitive. The second-phase will be held on March 08, while the final counting will be done on March 11.
