The Congress party has potentially inflicted a self-goal upon itself with its senior leader Tariq Anwar waging a personal attack against Prime Minister Narendra Modi hours after his remark slamming the Congress on ‘dynasty politics’. Speaking to ANI, the Congress leader stated that the PM was making statements against the Gandhi family as he did not have an heir of his own.
“Narendra Modi Ji is saying this as he does not come from a dynasty. How can one who does not come from a dynasty say this? Tell me one profession where dynasty is not encouraged,” Congress leader Tariq Anwar said hours after the PM shared a link to his blog post on Twitter today morning.
Taking to Twitter earlier in the day, PM Modi tweeted, “The biggest casualty of dynastic politics are institutions. From the press to Parliament. From soldiers to free speech. From the Constitution to the courts. Nothing is spared. Sharing some thoughts”.
Speaking to ANI, Anwar said that the Prime Minister was making such comments as he did not have a successor of his own. “In every corner of the world, be it any profession, legacy is taken forward by the people. Modi Ji does not have a successor which is why he is making such comments,” ANI quoted Anwar as saying. Anwar is a five-time Lok Sabha MP and two-time member of the Rajya Sabha.
Modi has been known to turn personal attacks against him to his advantage during polls. The infamous ‘chaiwala’ jibe, or the “khoon ki dalali” remark, Modi has used poll campaigns to turn these remarks on its head and work to his advantage. A personal attack of this nature could also return to haunt the Congress yet again.
In his blog the prime minister said, the 2014 3l3ction results were epoch as it was for the first time in India’s history that a non-dynastic party was elected to power huge majority “The mandate of 2014 was epoch-making also because it was for the first time in the history of India that a non-dynastic party was blessed with a complete majority,” he said.
“India has seen that whenever dynastic politics has been powerful, institutions have taken a severe beating,” the prime minister then added.
