Found in southern Meghalaya, living root bridges are made by the Khasi and Jaintia people, from the roots of banyan trees. These bridges, made by the local tribes to cross rivers, have now become an eco-tourism attraction. The Umshiang double-decker bridge, which is more than 180 years old, is the most famous among many bridges of its kind in the region. Living root bridges are commonly found in Shnongpdeng, Nongbareh, Khonglah, Padu, and Kudeng Rimi villages of the West Jaintia Hills district and villages of Tynrong, Mynteng, Nongriat, Nongthymmai, Laitkynsew in the East Khasi Hills district.
